Trump Admin Efforts Could Sharply Reduce DC Crime COMMENTARY By John R. Lott Jr.August 12, 2025 Trump Admin Efforts Could Sharply Reduce DC CrimeAP When 10 juveniles brutally attacked former DOGE whiz kid Edward Coristine – nicknamed “Big Balls” – in an attempted carjacking that left him bloodied, Washington, D.C.’s violent crime rate exploded into a political flashpoint. President Trump’s decision to federalize the D.C. police and bring in FBI agents and the National Guard to fight crime has upset liberals who attack it as “unnecessary” and the media who fact check Trump’s statements on crime as false.

“I’m going to make our Capital safer and more beautiful than it ever was before,” President Trump vowed on Truth Social. “The criminals – you don’t have to move out. We’re going to put you in jail where you belong.” On Monday morning, Trump unveiled his plans, announcing a historic escalation of law enforcement in D.C. by deploying the National Guard to patrol the streets and placing the city’s police department under federal control.

Republicans are also making moves to let victims defend themselves. The Republican appropriations bill for next year, now before the House, aims to change current law, allowing anyone with a valid concealed handgun permit in their home state to legally carry in D.C. With about 8,000 concealed handgun permits, only about 1.3% of the adult population has such a permit.

Good job, Republicans. By putting concealed carry permit holders into the next appropriations bill you're probably going to get it passed because of reconciliation. Right there the crime rate in DC will drop because any car jacker will not know whether he's trying to jack a car that's operated by an ordinary DC resident or someone with a CC permit.

For once, it’s our side that isn’t letting a crisis go to waste.

I went to the University of Salamanca, Spain in 1978. Franco had only been dead a few years. During Franco’s rule, they said a naked woman could walk alone down the street at 2am without being accosted because they knew what would happen. Consequences work. So does locking up creeps. I’ve been told Federal prisons are not nice.

What’s really needed is a complete re-work of the DC’s soft-on-crime criminal code and the appointment of conservative judges. While they’re at it, Congress should allow defendants to choose trials outside of the DC, where Republican’s face a jury pool that hates them.

Most perps are not caught

I actually think it will be a double edged sword. Some crimes will see lower numbers, but crimes related to unruly protests will greatly increase, as the Left will use the police takeover as a cause from which the recruit the masses.

The bad actors will move to MD, VA. Crime is down in DC. But now MD and VA have an issue.

Wuli, you sound like LA Mayor Bass Governor Newsom when they said federal police presence in LA would inflame the situation and make things worse.

I’ve shared this several times but it took my son 6 months to get his CC in Virginia. He said if you wanted to check on the status, you were required to go to the courthouse. His best friend was a SS agent & we liked it when they hung out because he was always armed.

No. I’m only admitting what we know the Leftists will do. As Obama taught them - never let a good crisis go to waste.
