GOP Reps. Burchett, Ogles (TN) eye Senate seat amid Blackburn gubernatorial bid

Sen. Marsha Blackburn’s (R-Tenn.) nascent gubernatorial bid has kicked off a shadow race for her Senate seat in the event she wins, with Reps. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) and Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) each eyeing the seat.

Burchett confirmed to The Hill that he would be interested in the Senate seat if Blackburn was elected governor. CNN first reported Burchett’s interest in the seat.

Ogles, too, said he would be interested in the Senate seat.

“Definitely interested in it. I’ve expressed my interest,” Ogles told The Hill.

Ogles joked about going up against Burchett for the position: “We’ll probably do some sort of steer wrestling or something like that.”

The shadow race kicked off just hours after Blackburn officially announced her gubernatorial bid Wednesday.

Tennessee law dictates that in the event of a U.S. Senate vacancy, a successor would be elected in the next regular November election to fulfill the remainder of the term. But if the vacancy “will deprive the state of its full representation at any time congress may be in session,” the governor has the ability to appoint a successor until the special election is held.

That means Blackburn, who was reelected to a six-year term in 2024, could potentially appoint her own successor if she wins the 2026 gubernatorial election.

Burchett said she has not talked to Blackburn about his interest, but noted his long relationship with her.

How interesting. Rep. Burchett could become a senator if all goes to plan.

I did not know he was interested but he's quite well known and if he wants to go for it he would no doubt have support...

I’d go for Burchett. Unlike Marsha Blackburn, he probably would NOT have voted to certify Biden’s stolen election.

I hope Blackburn loses the primary for Governor, and that he life in politics is OVER!!

No. You want her to finish out her term.

“You want her to finish out her term.”

I wanted her (and Hagerty) to resign in disgrace on Jan. 7, 2021. Her TV ad in TN is laughable, saying how much she loves TN and that she gives a rat’s ass about the people. She doesn’t.

If you email her with a specific question or concern, her reply is a gag-worthy boilerplate bafflegab abomination.

She doesn’t.

No sh*t...her 'actions' on 'behalf' of Tennessee Helene victims were laughable. PLEASE don't get me started.

She ONLY cares about power and climbing the ladder to the top, and she’s a pretty good actress pretending. I don’t know if you’re on the TN Forum here but it seems our opinion of MB it typical. The people who support her either aren’t TN residents or are not paying attention.

My wife and I attended two ‘Helene Recovery’ forums after losing our house...she couldn’t be bothered attending, but one of her staff showed up. The woman was an assh*le the first time around (no help whatsoever), so we both ignored the same woman the second time around. Governor? We won’t be voting for her...not a frickin’ chance.

Sunday like when Tim Burchett announced that he’d be meeting with constituents one day at Lenoir City City Hall. We made an appointment to meet with him.

When we got there, he wasn’t, but he sent a staff guy. Also an a$$hole mouth breather. Didn’t look at either of us in the eye once. Mumbled. It had to do with pharma. He mumbled that they couldn’t get involved with private companies. When I started to rattle off the times they DO get involved, he called for the next appointment.

Whatever charisma Burchett has, that doesn’t trickle down to his staff.

Bottom line: TN had some good showmen, but 🤮
