Trump's tariff on India to do little to upset iPhone manufacturing plans

President Donald Trump's 25% tariffs on Indian goods will do little to slow the role of the Asian country as a key hub for manufacturing iPhones, even when it means more expensive smartphones for U.S. consumers, analysts and industry executives said.

Apple has realigned its India exports to almost exclusively serve the U.S. market, with nearly all the $3.2 billion-worth iPhones exported by Foxconn from India going to the United States between March and May.

It's "too early to say" if recent events or future changes in Trump's stance will alter Apple's manufacturing plans in India, an industry executive familiar with Apple's strategy said. "These plans are made with a longer window."

Trump on Wednesday imposed a 25% tariff on goods imported from the country, effective Friday, a move that sent jitters across India Inc, though some view it as a negotiation tactic.

For Apple, India is now central to its strategy of diversifying manufacturing beyond China, where geopolitical pressures have pushed it to consider alternative bases.

India supplied 71% of all iPhones sold in the U.S. market between April and June, up from 31% a year earlier, driven by a corresponding decline in shipments from China, according to Counterpoint Research.

Despite the newly announced tariffs, manufacturing iPhones in India would continue to remain cost-competitive, with expenses lower than when Apple began production there eight years ago, narrowing the cost gap with China, analysts said.

Read the room Apple. These hypocrites complain about sending weapons to Ukraine and being tough on Russia then put huge investments into their allies who then give the money ton Russia. Is Apple in support of the war in Ukraine? Are they supporters of the madman dictator? Hypocrites!

India isn’t complaining about weapons to Ukraine. India just buys oil from Russia. India isn’t part to the Holy Ukraine war. Same for apple… they just want their phones made. Most people in the world aren’t ordering their existence around the well-being on the A-hole Ukrainians and the neocon project.

Hell, apple just moved from China because of the tariffs.
Where are they supposed to go now to make you happy?

I guess in your world Apple, India, China, Brazil, the Congo, Mexico, etc should all stop what they are doing and structure themselves on how to best support Ukraine.
Lunacy…

Apple is in the business of manufacturing and selling phones and computers around the world. War and supporting the DC/London axis isn’t one of their main focus issues.

Yea but they are real quick to condemn Trump when he doesn’t go all in (Supporters and Investors of Apple). If it’s so important that you have to condemn the President of the United States it’s very hypocritical to go back and fund the war yourself.

Glad you Asked. There is no tariff if you manufacture in the U.S. That was really the point of the comment. I don't much care for Ukraine, Russia, India and their wars. The comment could have just as easily read, Bring it home Apple. Maybe when Trump puts on an additional 10% for BRICS countries plus another 25% for buying Russia oil Apple and her investors will have enough incentive.

On a different thread, I basically asked the same thing. Basically, India, Brazil, and several other countries are supposed to be punished for the "crime" of failing to support Ukraine. Not for actively supporting Russia or for interfering with NATO aid to Ukraine in any way, mind you, but just for choosing not to take sides.

Somehow, we're supposed to believe that Ukraine's national security is so important that everyone's life and the whole world economy needs to be turned upside down to defend it. I fail to see why a country that has been of negligible economic or cultural significance for its past 45 year history merits such a global crusade.

As a reality check, the Ukraine-obsessed zealots should ask themselves this: what sacrifices has Ukraine ever made to support India in its fight against jihadis in Kashmir or in its border disputes with Pakistan? Did Ukraine cut off trade and diplomatic relations with Pakistan out of solidarity with India? No of course they didn't. Then neither India nor Brazil nor anyone else should be in any way obligated to change the way they run their affairs or do business for the sake of Ukraine either.

My own position is that if European countries want to spend their money to buy US arms to give to Ukraine, that's fine - it doesn't cost us anything (in fact, it boosts our economy) and it doesn't disrupt our supply chains and diplomatic relations with the rest of the world. But apparently that's not enough for the loons who want nothing short of World War III to defend Ukraine's sacred borders.
