UCLA to pay $6 million to settle complaints of discrimination against Jewish students

UCLA has agreed to pay over $6 million to settle discrimination complaints stemming from last year’s pro-Palestinian demonstrations, in which Jewish students and faculty were allegedly prevented from accessing classrooms, the library and other campus locations.

Meanwhile, in a separate action, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Tuesday afternoon it has determined that the university violated the rights of Jewish and Israeli students by failing to “adequately respond to complaints of severe, pervasive and objectively offensive harassment and abuse” between Oct. 7, 2023, and the present.

“Our investigation into the University of California system has found concerning evidence of systemic anti-Semitism at UCLA that demands severe accountability from the institution,” U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement. “This disgusting breach of civil rights against students will not stand: DOJ will force UCLA to pay a heavy price for putting Jewish Americans at risk and continue our ongoing investigations into other campuses in the UC system.”

It remained unclear what that “heavy price” will be. The university and federal authorities are expected to hold settlement talks, but a federal lawsuit could follow if no agreement is reached.

The separate $6 million settlement agreement announced Tuesday stems from a federal lawsuit filed in June 2024 in which two law students and an undergraduate alleged the university allowed a group of students and outsiders to set up a pro-Palestinian encampment that forcibly kept Jewish students and faculty from accessing critical parts of campus.

UCLA allegedly reinforced the pro-Palestinian zones — by providing metal barriers and sending away Jewish students and faculty — while taking no effective action to ensure safe passage for the students, the suit says.

$6 mill? Isn’t that the number of jews who were murdered by Hitler? How did they come up with that figure? Seems like they should sued for a lot more since the school was encouraging hitler-like hatred against the jews trying to get an education!

$6M is chicken feed to these universities.

Now, Europe is now going to recognize Palestine supposedly if they stop the war. They probably can’t behave themselves that long but they’ll for sure start it back up two seconds after.

Chump change. Why not 600 million? That’s what they would give any left wing ethnic groups.

Its entirely appropriate that a state institution which was complicit with the systemic violation of the civil rights of Jews be held accountable. When people migrate to America consumed with frustration, hatred and unresolved grievances, they often utilize the freedoms they now have to vent and attack the people they blame and associate for their situation. Eventually this hatred and rage will result in their own destruction. America’s political leaders who patronize such behavior in the hope of enhancing their own power are despicable. Rational Jews will soon stop calling their tormenters “fellow Democrats”.

To these “administrators,” it's the cost of doing business, as lawyers say. Of course that's a ‘valid’ stance since it's not their money. Count on alumni donations dropping like flies.

Perhaps this amount settles multiple claims. No individual claimant would have known the total. That still leaves the question of whether the aggregate amount was chosen to make an evil point.

I was watching live streaming from at both UCLA and UC Irvine.

The payment should have been $600 million by the UC Regents.

6$M to each student would be fair. Anything less should signal going back to court and suing UCLA into oblivion.

it’s almost like a slap in the face IF that is what they did it for- sort of saying “Here’s a dollar per holocaust victim, now shut up” I’m probably making too much of it, but the amount just seemed weird

Only $6 million? Thought the payout would be more. We’re talking about the school that’s the leader in college rioting and demonstrations.
