Japan's Election Results Are Not a Sharp Left Turn
The Japan Times (English Edition) ^ | 20 July 2025 | Japan Times

The two parties in the ruling coalition lost 19 seats in the upper house election which is similar to our U.S. Senate with 124 of 248 seats up for grabs every three years. These two parties are the LDP and Komeito. Liberal Democrat Party (LDP), which uses an elephant as its symbol, has ruled Japan for the vast majority of the postwar years. It still holds 100 seats and a strong plurality in the upper house. Komeito is a Buddhist fundamentalist party associated with the Sokka Gakkai sect, which is as annoying to some Japanese as Christian fundamentalist are to their American counterparts. It accounted for 6 of the 19 seats lost.

The biggest opposition party is the Constitutional Democrat Party (CDP) which stayed even. They might be compared to Joe Manchin or Jon Tester Democrats despite their name. They were formerly known as the Japan Socialist Party, a brand that didn't sell very well.

The big gainers in the opposition parties were the Democratic People's Party (DDP) and Sanseito, a MAJA movement often compared to Trump's MAGA movement. Each gained 13 seats. DDP is mostly a successor to the old Minshato, a Populist-Centrist Party.

The Japan Communist Party (JCP), which is actually to the right of America's Democrats on most issues is the smallest of the five historical parties and actually lost four seats.

CPJ is the new Conservative Party of Japan which gained their first two CDP (the Socialists) would have to keep damn near everyone on board to take over the majority.

“The Japan Communist Party (JCP), which is actually to the right of America’s Democrats on most issues”

Our Democrats are also to the left of EVERY party in Europe. There is nothing that comes close to them in the Western (formerly ‘free’) World. That’s why I have a bit of trouble when people claim that Democrats are “no worse than Republicans” or that there is “no difference between the parties”. The people who claim this are either TOTAL IDIOTS, or trolls trying to suppress our vote.

Sanseito, a MAJA movement often compared to Trump’s MAGA movement

What does that stand for? Make America Japan again?

Yep. Japan has a very sensible immigration policy compared to us, but some think it is too much.

I guess Bernie and AOC couldn't be elected if they were in that party...

When a COMMUNIST PARTY is to the right of the US Democrats, you know why they are at 20%!!

Buddhist fundamentalist party

I can't imagine anything more antithetical to the actual teachings of the Buddha than a political party, or even a religion. Idiots.

Meanwhile...

Japanese right wing accounts have been getting suspended on twitter during election time. What the **** is going on Elon Musk?

Asterisks mine.

That's a very good question.

I'd ask Musk myself on X, but I've been banned there for over six years.
