Trump’s Dwindling Patience With Putin
National Review ^ | July 15, 2025 | National Review Editors

After a long stretch of undeserved patience for the bad faith and brutality of Vladimir Putin, President Trump is now conveying, in action as well as words, that he is done being strung along.

Trump announced Monday that, under a new arrangement, NATO would buy American weapons and pass them on to Kyiv, amounting to billions of dollars in new matériel. Trump said new Patriot batteries could reach Ukraine in days.

Trump also announced his intention to impose new tariffs if there is no cease-fire within the next 50 days, although the details are vague, and he’s made these kinds of threats before.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick later said the U.S. could choose to impose either additional tariffs on Russia itself, or sanctions on countries that do business with Russia. The direct tariffs would have minimal effect, but the so-called secondary sanctions could have real bite.

In Monday’s remarks, the president sounded like a man exasperated that he’s put one good offer after another on the table for months, only to watch Putin turn his nose up at every potential deal, and had repeated seemingly constructive phone calls with Putin followed up immediately by Russian barrages against Ukrainian cities.

Trump thought he could get Putin to agree to a deal within the first month of his new term. Putin thought he could bully Trump into doing what he wants. Both men were wrong it seems.

Do not be taken in by analysis based on theatrics and personalities. Russia's ground offensive is stalled due to Ukraine's massive and effective use of drones and Russia's inadequate weapons and manpower and impaired logistics. In addition, the Russian economy and rail system are nearing breakdown.

By putting the focus on Trump's impatience with Putin, the US and NATO are generating pressure on the Russian oligarchs and power agencies to remove Putin and seek peace from a reasonable Trump. If not, by the end of the summer or the end of the year at the latest, Russia is likely to be in such distress that their troops and populace give up the fight and turn on Putin.

“National Review? I thought they died.”

They certainly should have when they went hard-core NeverTrumper, but I think USAID threw them a lifeline, as they did with other Neocon rags.

In addition, the Russian economy and rail system are nearing breakdown.

You continue to live in a fantasy world. Any credible source can demonstrate that the Russian economy has continued to thrive despite the “sanctions” and other challenges imposed on it. This is the first time that I have heard the outlandish tale that the Russian transportation system is in trouble.

Putin as evil as you and I both believe him to be, has never been more powerful or more popular with his people or his allies. The current escalation was a predictable result of the drone strike deep in the heart of Russia that destroyed $Billions of dollars of military equipment.

I do not know what the solution is here. Ukraine will fail instantaneously when external support is withdrawn. That makes this conflict a proxy war between Russia, NATO and the US. The government in Ukraine is a corrupt puppet state that has no accountability to the people living in Ukraine.

This is a massive waste of resources and lives that has no well articulated reason for continuation.

If the Euros are indeed paying for the weapons, why not?
Are the Chinese funding Russia’s war?

Russia has crushingly high interest rates, depleted state finances, a severe labor shortage, and shortages of consumer staples like potatoes and cabbage. Industrial production, including war production, is increasingly constrained by sanctions, lack of skilled labor, and lack of new equipment.

Do these problems matter? People are clever and adaptive enough to get by for a time, but eventually, as burdens mount, critical and irremediable weaknesses appear. The Russian rail system is now in distress due to the lack of roller bearings and proper levels of maintenance. As a result, much of Russia's rolling stock is unusable and the rail system is in decline. Russian combat logistics is badly affected.

Did you notice that the Russian Minister of Transportation was publicly fired and soon found dead, supposedly by suicide? This a sign that the troubles with the Russian rail system have reached Putin and that he is alarmed. That will not retrieve the situation. My guess is that Putin will be out within a year.

No, your wishful thinking is that Putin will be out within a year. All of your observations are supported by wishful thinking from biased sources. The Russian economy expanded by over 3% last year despite frequent apocalyptic predictions from you and your “sources”.

If it looks like someone is going to be blamed for something bad or is likely to be a liability to Putin... their life expectancy is greatly compromised. That does not prove that Putin is “alarmed”. It demonstrates that his minions can end the life of anyone within his jurisdiction. This is not a sign of weakness...

My guess is that if President Trump does not pull our support... $Hundreds of Billions more taxpayer funds will be wasted. Unknown thousands more lives will be ended, or destroyed and Ukraine will end up a barren wasteland. The world will continue teetering at the edge of a nuclear abyss. And you and your brethren will continue cheering on this never-ending stupidity.

Putin does not want to be thought of as kowtowing to Trump. He will make a big splash this summer and end the war in glory.

I’m not sure what Putin will do this summer, but I agree, if he kowtows to Trump, then Putin will be sent to the Gulag and replaced by someone who will quickly finish off the war with Ukraine, and finish off any other country that tries to get in the way. After all, they have the ‘tools’ to do just that.
