A Turkish court on Wednesday blocked access to some content from Grok, developed by Elon Musk-founded company xAI, after authorities said the chatbot generated responses insulting President Tayyip Erdogan, modern Turkey's founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and religious values. Concerns over political bias, hate speech and factual inaccuracy in AI chatbots have mounted since the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT in 2022, with Grok dropping content accused of antisemitic tropes and praise for Adolf Hitler.
Ankara chief prosecutor's office said it launched an investigation, and marked Turkey's first such ban on content from an artificial intelligence tool. Authorities cited violations of laws that make such insults a criminal offence punishable by up to four years in prison. Neither X, nor its owner Elon Musk could immediately be reached for comment. They have not referred to the decision on the platform.
Last month, Musk promised an upgrade to Grok, suggesting there was "far too much garbage in any foundation model trained on uncorrected data". Grok, which is integrated into X, reportedly generated offensive content about Erdogan and Ataturk when asked certain questions in Turkish, media said. The Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) adopted the ban after the court order. Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu was later cited by broadcaster NTV as saying that Turkey had not yet imposed a total access ban on Grok but that it would do so if necessary, adding Turkish authorities would discuss the issue with X.

Any so-called intelligence engine, AI, Google, similar searches and ‘expert analysis’ ... are susceptible to GIGO.
The difference in Erdogan the Islamist Dictator of Turkey, and General Kemal was huge. It is thought that Kemal was an atheist, but he was secular as far as religion went. He brought Turkey into being a modern nation. The Kemalists were in control from end of WWI to long after their NATO membership.
Now, inside of Turkey, that would be heretic. Probably subject to death.
It would be difficult to insult arrogant. He’s very dangerous and needs to ge retired
The secular nature of the Turkish government was undermined by European elitist arrogance\ignorance. The Turkish military was the guarantor of the secular nature of the Turkish state. Soon after the Edrogan and his Islamists were elected the Turkish military knew from past experience where things were going to go. The signaled they were going to step in and remove Edrogan. The Europeans (EU) got the vapors, they couldn’t get their head around the idea that a military could act as a Constitutional guarantor. They threatened to withhold or block support for Turkey to enter the EU, whch Turkey thought their economy desperately needed. They then refused their support and undercut the Turkish military’s effort. Subsequently since then Edrogan has purged the military, jailed or exiled true Kemalist officers and you have what we have now.
Me: Did Kemal Ataturk have an entire menagerie called Abdul?
Grok: Processing… (then “Retry”)
Interesting.
Xitter, itself, is falling prey to auto censoring. Algorithms seem to go thru comments and if they find a word that was installed by some progressive TWOT that used to work there, the comment is banned.
I ran into this when commenting on something said directly by someone , like in a CNN post. The original post can be horrific, but if I question it I get banned if I repeat what was said in that post.
E.g., imagine a classroom discussing the cultural aspects of the “N word...” Yah know what I mean. If any teacher or professor so much as quotes the word some TWOT in class will report him .
Like Musk says, all AI’s use the WWW to come up with its opinion. The WWW is a trash heap, and rightly so. But, if you don’t filter it a bit, GIGO — as noted below.
Remember early days of Wikipedia? The little horrors of the WWW came out and corrupted most everything they disagreed with.
I am familiar with Turkish history.
Have a number of friends in the region for the last 10 years.
Lost a good friend to Erdogan’s drones about 4 years ago.
