Poland to tighten border controls amid growing tension over irregular crossings

Poland will introduce temporary border controls with Germany and Lithuania from Monday amid growing tensions over irregular migration, the Polish prime minister, Donald Tusk, has said.

The decision, made after a government meeting with the Polish border guard on Tuesday, comes in response to growing domestic political pressure and far-right backed protests at Poland’s border crossings with Germany over the weekend.

In remarks at the beginning of the weekly cabinet meeting, Tusk blamed Germany for the move, accusing it of a policy shift resulting in “effectively refusing entry … to migrants who are heading to Germany to apply for asylum or other forms of status”.

“The way operations are conducted at the Polish-German border has clearly changed over the past month,” he said.

The German chancellor, Friedrich Merz, made a more hardline migration policy a pillar of his election campaign earlier this year. After he took office in May, Germany stationed more police at the border and said some people trying to enter the country would be turned away.

Even before that, Merz’s predecessor in February extended by six months the temporary border checks Germany had imposed on its frontiers last autumn, as it attempted to cut the number of people arriving in the country.

Tusk argued that the recent policy shift had placed undue pressure on Poland to accept individuals denied entry at the German border.

“With no border checks on the Polish side, it becomes difficult to determine whether those being returned or redirected to Poland should be sent there,” he said.

Tusk added that he had spoken “several times” with Merz, warning him that Poland’s “patient stance … was wearing thin”.

Poland and the other Schengen countries are discovering why the United States Constitution makes the Federal government responsible for immigration and naturalization (”an uniform rule of naturalization...”).

It’s because the colonies were concerned that with open state borders, some of the less diligent states would start admitting bad actors who would then be free to cross into their states. So...one rule for everyone, to be discussed at the national level in the Congress.

The EU has shown to be not only incapable of that, but also deranged: they intentionally let in millions in an effort to change the character of the states that make up the European Union.

All of which leads to dis-unification.

The EU is going to need an actual President with powers.

Right now, the EU acted like the US did before the establishment of the Constitution under the Articles of Confederation.

Think that’s a good point.

250 years out, they still don’t understand what Madison and Jefferson did. Slow learners...

It’s harder in Europe. Everyone hates everyone else who lives two ridges over. The endless wars over property lines (”borders”) are evidence of that. The Germans still want Prussia back, the Poles want to keep Silesia, Russia thinks they own everything East of the Vistula, on and on...it’ll never end. Like the current family fight east of the Dnepr...

We should all just stay out of it, build some bleachers and sell popcorn, watch them whack each other. Hard to believe White people are that stoopid but...

If they’re illegally in Poland, I understand why Germany doesn’t want them. And why Poland doesn’t want them, either. But Poland should accept them, and immediately send them home.

Or at least back to the nation (Belarus?) from which they entered Poland illegally.

Legitimate asylum claims must be honored, but believing that you’ll receive better benefits in the next country along the chain is not grounds for asylum.

The EU needs top officials who are answerable to the electorate.

Yes. But the EU is not going to want that. They'll collapse in 10 years. Poland will continue to do better economically. Countries in Western Europe like the UK will continue to decline due to socialism.

Yep, all the ‘refugees’ in France are perfectly safe where they are, but instead of living in tents at Calais, they want to live in nice hotels in England where they’ll get food walk-around money and access to English girls.

I would trust Tusk about as far as I could throw him.

They only went through Poland because Frau Merkel invited them to Germany.

Had to get that in there.

This. I’d jail them and use the for hard labor so that they would be grateful to go home.

Exactly, the point is to make the invaders do anything not to get stuck in Poland. Believe me, they won’t like it there.
