They weren't, actually. They wore suits and ties, and were very conentional in their appearance. That's why they had their own variety show on TV. But they would always push on the envelope, just avoiding censorship.
In my opinion, this was much sneakier than Pete Seeger who was a Card-Carrying Communist.
