Donald Trump is set to make a state visit to Britain this year - possibly as early as September - as Sir Keir Starmer lays out the red carpet for the US president.
But No10 has been forced to deny claims that it over-ruled the wishes of the King after Trump vowed to make Canada the US's '51st state'.
The Manu Regia, the hand-signed formal invitation from the monarch to Trump for a second state visit, was hand-delivered last week by British representatives from the Washington embassy to the White House.
Sir Keir invited Trump to Britain when he went to the Oval Office earlier this year, when the plan was for an initial private visit to the King in Scotland over the summer first.
But the Times claimed today that Starmer had agreed to a Trump demand to go straight to the state event, full of pomp and ceremony.
It said the King had wanted to slow pedal the event after the president's comments about Canada.
Charles, who is King of Canada, visited Ottawa in May to open its Parliament in what was seen as a show of support for the country's independence.
Asked if No 10 had overruled the King over the visit, a Downing Street spokesman said: 'That's untrue. During his visit to the White House in February the Prime Minister was delighted to extend His Majesty the King's invite for a historic second state visit to the president and first lady and the president was pleased to accept.
'Of course the Prime Minister looks forward to welcoming President Trump.'
Confirmation of the dates will follow in due course in the normal way - but it is understood that September is the preferred option.

Personally I wish he’d wait until Farage moves into 10 Downing, but I’ve learned to trust 47 so let ‘er rip.
Yawn...
Make the British come here if they want to meet. Stamer and the king and the other Globalists hate Trump.
“Overruled the King”
LOL…there’s some irony there!
Trump’s foolish “threat” was never intended to be real, but it was all the Canadian leftists needed to pick a fight with him.
The UK is puny and insignificant, needing US support to remain relevant.
President Trump’s term will have ended by then.
Yes, and Canadian voters (and Australian voters) decided “We’ll vote to destroy our own lives! That’ll teach that Trump!”
And they made themselves that way. It is not how it had to be, or even has to continue being. But decades of poor leadership since Thatcher leads to this. Truss had the right ideology but severely lacked leadership skills, and was stabbed in the back by the conservative supermajority that wasn’t even remotely conservative and kept enacting Labour policies and allowing the bureaucracy to run amuck.
I read in one of the FR articles that Keir has such low acceptance that he might not make it to next year, that's what I was basing my statement on. If he is going to hang on until '29, then Trump might as well see him this fall.
I see little chance Labour would vote to call a new election early. Replacing Starmer with a new PM does not require an election - they choose that the same way a Speaker of the House is chosen here, with the King formally appointing him / her as the new PM after that.
