OAKLAND, Calif. - Oakland city officials say they're prepared for the Juneteenth celebration Thursday after sideshows and a wild shootout marred last year's festivities.
"We're certainly not looking for a repeat of activity. We're far more prepared this year than last year," said City Administrator Justin Johnson.

He said city officials have learned lessons in the wake of the violence last year, including a chaotic gun battle between two groups that injured 14 people.
Happy Juneteenth

News channels should have a Juneteenth running death toll count in their lower right corners tomorrow.

It sure is a sad commentary isn’t it? Celebrating the history of the end of slavery should be a happy occasion. It should be something which black youth observe, and be pleased about a history lesson on the holiday.

I need to look up the definition of that word: “celebrate”.

I know the area, and my advice is this: Take the city leaders at their word and attend. However, at all costs, avoid celebrations in the vicinity of Martin Luther King Blvd. As in numerous big cities, you’re taking your hands in your life if you do there.
A sad commentary

Oakland, “Juneteenth,” celebration.
I don’t see how the word “safe” fits in there.

>>>Celebrating the history of the end of slavery…
Juneteenth was/is not about the end of slavery.
It was a Texas thing only.
Slavery was only ended in states in armed rebellion with the US government.
Slavery in the US only ended on 12-06-1865 with ratification of the 13th admendment.

Talking about this holiday with my (white) boss today as we prepare to take the next two days off from work.
The question was: Do we celebrate this? How?
The overall consensus in the workplace is that Juneteenth is a black holiday, --unlike, say, MLK day, which is an American holiday.
So, blacks (maybe?) are going to celebrate it? Does anyone else even feel comfortable celebrating it? How do non-blacks celebrate Juneteenth? I think most will be content just to have the day off.
Again, another Biden-era effort at divisiveness.
