IAEA's Grossi: Iran's nuclear facilities buried too deep underground to be hit by 'surgical strike'

Praising the talks between U.S. and Iran as a positive development that could avert a catastrophic war, the International Atomic Energy Agency’s director-general Rafael Mariano Grossi warned that the Islamic Republic has the materials necessary to break out toward a nuclear weapon.

“Iran doesn’t have a nuclear weapon at this moment, but it has the material,” the official told the Financial Times in an in-depth interview.

Israel’s threat of military action means that “the Iranian thing has incredible potential to become catastrophic," Grossi warned. "If there is a failure in negotiation, this will imply most probably military action.”

Worse still, Grossi said he believed that Iran’s nuclear capabilities could not be destroyed with a single surgical strike. “The most sensitive things are half a mile underground — I have been there many times,” he said. “To get there you take a spiral tunnel down, down, down.”

It’s not like Iran hasn’t been preparing everyday for the last forty five years. Enough delivery missiles would survive somewhere in the country even if you hit them with nukes. How long to assemble and smoke Tel Aviv?

I’ve said all along not to let Ukraine get in the way of using Putin as a mediator. From Trump’s remarks about his conversation with Putin, it looks like DJT is coming around.

And you’ll have the Qatar-Tucker-cons on Freep claiming Iran has nuclear program for peaceful purpose. To quote Tuckercon, “there is zero credible intelligence that suggests Iran is anywhere near building a bomb, or has plans to.”

There’s an entrance/exit isn’t there? They could be buried twenty miles deep, won’t do them any good, if they can’t get to them.

With precision guidance, it seems you could drop one bunker-buster after another at the same point to reach some pretty deep depths.

How about a multi-megaton ground burst? I’d bet that would save the world from the dangers of nuclear proliferation.

"Fixed fortifications are a testament to the stupidity of man"

Is it just me or does Patton actually resemble a certain president?

They’ve got lots of facilities. 45 years worth. A couple dozen nukes and the world never looks the same again.

Seriously. If they can’t get to it, what good will it do them?

So seal up the entrances and let them all die of hypoxia or starvation.

Problem solved.

“ Fixed fortifications are monuments to the stupidity of Man.”

- General George S Patton, Jr.

If it can be seen, it can be destroyed. In the case of underground shelters, they all have doors and air vents. We have MANY 30,000 pound bombs that can be delivered within a foot of where they are targeted. Good luck to Iran.

So the Iranian nuclear capability is 100$ geared towards the peaceful use of nuclear power which is why Iran must hide it so deep underground.

GOTCHA!!

<< Grossi said he believed that Iran’s nuclear capabilities could not be destroyed with a single surgical strike. >>

Correct, it’ll take a few. And with Iran’s air defense systems now in pathetic shape after Israel took care of biz late last year ( https://www.timesofisrael.com/israel-strike-on-iran-took-out-radar-sets-to-guide-ballistic-missiles-report/amp/ ), it won’t be nearly as difficult.
