A former Fire Service chief and nine others have been convicted for their roles in managing a 2018 wildfire that killed more than 100 people outside Athens.
Several former civil administrators on trial were acquitted at a hearing that was disrupted by protests from victims’ relatives.
The fire, which broke out in the seaside area of Mati, east of Athens, spread rapidly due to strong winds.
Many residents died trying to escape — either by car through a dense forest or fleeing into the sea.

A sentencing hearing was scheduled for Wednesday due to the delay caused by the courtroom protests.
“My daughter went there for one day and never made it out. No one told her to leave,” Eleni Siapkara, dressed in black and holding a white rose, told reporters. “They destroyed our family.”
Her daughter Calliope, 35, died in the fire. Siapkara and other grieving relatives released black helium-filled balloons in remembrance of the tragedy.
Six of the defendants were initially found guilty in a trial that concluded last year, but an appeals court prosecutor challenged the verdict, leading to a retrial.
None of them were jailed while awaiting the outcome of the second trial.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
If I remember correctly, it was an arson fire as there are many there.
People don’t realize that with a strong wind there is little anyone can do to say nothing of the crazy fuel loads,
“According to Associated Press, senior officials from the Fire Service and civil protection agencies were found guilty of negligence resulting in loss of life and breach of duty for failing to safely direct the evacuation.”
As opposed to Maui, where the officials blocked roads and directed fleeing people BACK TO THE FIRE!...
Unfortunately European countries like to arrest government officials to blame for disasters.
Several years ago Italy convicted seismologists for failing to predict an earthquake. Sentenced them to 6 years.

There is a bad habit in a lot of countries to find scape goats for any tragedy even when a clear-headed evaluation of the situation makes it obvious they were not in any position to do something better given the information they had at the time.
You see this a lot with plane crashes. If the pilot survives, he is going to jail depending on which country the accident occurs in.
Sure it did. It says that they didn’t warn the people to get out.
COVID *cough* Fauchi *cough cough*
The words “Greek fire” together in a headline remind me of something.
“senior officials from the Fire Service and civil protection agencies were found guilty of negligence resulting in loss of life and breach of duty for failing to safely direct the evacuation.”
