Quite likely. It was just a week ago (or less?) that President Trump gave Elon huge accolades for his work with DOGE and a key to the White House in a very friendly Oval Office ceremony.

But has the objective of the ruse been achieved, I wonder?

There was no deception involved - both Elon and Trump have strong opinions on how things should work - and they clashed on who was right.

Both men know the deficit’s a potential problem - the difference was they saw different paths to get to a shared goal.

Oh, the call can take place, but any agreement to stop feuding will have a nationwide injunction issued against it, claiming they do not have the authority to stop.

I don’t know that it is a ruse. It could be. I’m just observing and speculating for now.

A lot of people seem to be convinced that it’s all staged. Delgado and the gang on RAV’s Studio 6B were pushing the concept pretty hard earlier. I really don’t know, but I checked my popcorn supply, just in case.

I haven’t seen many sources confirming a scheduled phone call between Trump and Musk, so I guess we’ll see.

Apart from the advantage potentially gained by making political points, it is silly to make either of these two men a hero or a villain.

Donald Trump is doing what he must do as he finds himself playing political whack-a-mole against threats from all points of the political compass to get his big beautiful bill through to save his administration and the 2026 midterms.

Elon Musk, constitutionally insensitive, indeed nearly oblivious to political nuance, is proceeding from bedrock conviction that our debt/deficit pose a mortal threat to the nation.

To Musk, the deficit must be brought under control or the nation goes under. That must be done, not just through growth but with spending cuts. His experience with DOGE no doubt has firmed his conviction that waste abounds and waste must be cut. Given the consequences of failure to cut, petty politics to him count as trivialities that must be kicked aside to save the nation.

Donald Trump, who historically has always inclined toward stimulating growth as opposed to imposing austerity, is acutely sensitive to the politics and the narrow margins within which he must operate. Trump believes that his package of tariffs and stimulants will so energize the economy that the deficit will be closed, even though short-term, at least, deficits might well increase.

Each man proceeds from a rational point of view, their clash was inevitable not just because of their larger than life personalities, but because their convictions and circumstances make it virtually inevitable.

My thought exactly. It's the first time I've been critical of Trump since he came down the escalator. A strong leader would transcend bickering, and in doing so gain the respect of the world.
