Poland has elected Karol Nawrocki, a conservative historian and staunch nationalist, as its next president in a closely watched vote that signals a resurgence of right-wing populism in the heart of Europe.
Nawrocki, who is set to take office on Aug. 6, is expected to shape the country’s domestic and foreign policy in ways that could strain ties with Brussels while aligning the Central European nation of nearly 38 million people more closely with the administration of President Donald Trump in the United States.
Here are some key takeaways:
Nawrocki’s victory underscores the enduring appeal of nationalist rhetoric among about half of the country along the eastern flank of NATO and the European Union, and its deep social divisions.
The 42-year-old historian who had no previous political experience built his campaign on patriotic themes, traditional Catholic values, and a vow to defend Poland's sovereignty against the EU and larger European nations like Germany.
His win also reflects the appeal of right-wing nationalism across Europe, where concerns about migration, national sovereignty, and cultural identity have led to surging support for parties on the right — even the far right in recent times.
Far-right candidates did very well in Poland's first round of voting two weeks earlier, underlining the appeal of the nationalist and conservative views. Nawrocki picked up many of those votes.

Poles want Poland Polish, not EU Serfdom.
The Presstitutes are correct about one thing, this is a win for Poles, Europe, America and President Trump.
It seems most of Eastern Europe has accepted that the EU is a bad deal, and they are pulling away. Being dominated by Paris, Berlin, and Brussels makes no sense to them, nor should it.
The only reason that leftist punk Tusk got elected was because an army of selfish single women voters turned out for abortion. I swear abortion is the devils doorway
” Could strain ties with Brussels “.
If most of Europe with “ strain ties with Brussels “, the illegal immigrant invasion would stop, and law and order would return.
The EU is completely responsible for Europe’s demise.
Poles, like Hungarians and Slovaks, want the EU. To a large degree, they need the EU. They just don’t want to be ruled by Brussels. They don’t want Brussels forcing immigration, homosexuality and “european values” on them. They want the economic and political union without surrendering their sovereignty.
The EU thought they had conquered Poland with the election of Truss and a pro-EU parliament in 2023. It seems maybe they were wrong. Still, Poland needs a few more conservative allies to stop the EU’s march to social totalitarianism.
I am actually astonished the EU allowed this to happen. I wonder if they will overturn the results and ban the winning party.
Thank God that Poland, unlike Romania and France, still has free and fair elections.
No, Welfare Poles, like Welfare Hungarians and Welfare Slovaks, want the EU.
To a large degree, they need the EU.
They need the EU like they "need" Anthrax.
There is no Economic advantage for EU Serfs, and there is no Political Freedom in the EU.
Plenty of Nazis though.
True.
Correct.
They will try, we could nuke Brussels to help prevent it.
Yep, the Vampires and Frogs screwed themselves.
Agree.
The current center-left government has suspended the right of asylum and repulses attempts by Third World "refugees" to illegally enter Poland from Belarus. It has also withdrawn from the land mine treaty for obvious reasons.
However, Germany has been shoving "refugees" across the Polish border that it claims came from Poland. The center-left gov has been soft-pedaling this but it is angering a lot of Poles who expect their gov to stand up to the Germans.
The EU may try to punish Poland by withdrawing funds, but doing so with the center-left still in control of parliament may torpedo their electoral chances, so that is unlikely.
One big difference is that PiS is more protectionist than the globalist center-left and wants Polish industry protected and especially wants Polish farmers protected from cheap agricultural imports from Ukraine.
The biggest issue I see is that Poland is spending a lot of money building up its military and military industrial base but I don't see any focus on much needed army and training reforms or the development of any appropriate war-fighting doctrine. They are imitating Ukraine in developing a large militia but Ukraine is big enough geographically to fight defense in depth while Poland is not. I also don't see any imaginative strategy being developed for dealing with the Suwalki Gap problem. They should follow the Prussian example of training to fight aggressively and using maneuver to destroy any invading force because they do not have room to withdraw.
You are correct, the media has been promoting the European “Far Right” disinformation for Decades.
In this case, Polish patriots are right-wing.
