KYIV, June 1 (Reuters) - Ukrainian secret services were able to attack strategic bomber aircraft at Russian air bases on Sunday by hiding explosive-laden drones inside the roofs of wooden sheds, according to a Ukrainian security official and images posted online. The sheds were loaded onto trucks that were driven to the perimeter of the air bases. The roof panels of the sheds were lifted off by a remotely-activated mechanism, allowing the drones to fly out and begin their attack, the official said.
The security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said strikes were conducted on Sunday on four air bases, and that a total of 41 Russian warplanes were hit. Reuters was not able to independently verify that assertion. Unverified video and pictures posted on Russian social media showed Russian strategic bombers on fire at the Belaya air base in the Irkutsk region of Siberia. Igor Kobzev, the regional governor, said there had been a drone attack on a military unit near the village of Sredny, which is near the Belaya base, though he did not specify what the target was. He said the drones had been launched from a truck.
The Irkutsk region attack was the first time a drone assault had been mounted by Ukraine so far from the front lines, which are more than 4,300 km (2,670 miles) away. That is beyond the range of the long-range strike drones or ballistic missiles Ukraine has in its arsenal, so required a special scheme to get the drones close enough to the target...

Sheds whole new light on use of drones.
Impressive operation. And equally impressive operational security.
Ukraine and Russia do not want peace. The USA needs to get out of their way. Also, how many Chinese drones are in shipping containers here in the ground in the USA.
Perhaps all true, but I strongly suspect that this is a Neocon-written article, trying to pin everything on Ukraine, given what the response will be.
Be interesting to see if Russia takes the bait.

“Amazing”
Yup and coming to soon to a store near you, so grab an eyeful of the future.
Begging for a nuclear response by Russia is amazing?
Planes are so ridiculously vulnerable in the era of drones. Just fuel balloons in aluminum casing. Waiting to explode.
Let’s hope Taiwan is aware of this tactic.
“Sheds whole new light on use of drones.”
The Israelis and the American military have radar directed drone killers.
I think drones are a flash-in-the-pan weaponry. This attack was a one-off. If initial reports are accurate, it was successful, but won’t happen again. And you have to assume there are still drones in-waiting.
Extremely well planned and coordinated. The Ukes have no satellites or recon planes. They are famous for their inability to coordinate their ground offensives with supporting arms.
But somehow they planned and coordinated this? This was CIA and Brits that did all the targeting, planning and coordination.
I don’t like or trust perpetually begging Zelensky at all, but objectively speaking, I have to say it appears the Ukraine has some clever men planning their offensive strategy. Often moreso than Russia. Russia may have greater variety and quantities of weaponry. I can imagine Putin’s people trying to convince (or coerce) some of Z’s people to switch sides.
Fringe benefits!
No more than Russia’s been begging for oit by bombing it’s neighbor and trying to strip all of its neighbors of their sovereignty.
“Also, how many Chinese drones are in shipping containers here in the ground in the USA”
Uh, ask yourself how many suitcase nukes are littered across the landscape. Both Soviet and Chinese.
The Soviet crap is probably non-functional but the Chinese toys are probably shiny and new.
Cue the music “we’ll meet again...”
“This was CIA and Brits that did all the targeting, planning and coordination.’
I think your last remark helps to explain this stunning wave of efficiency from Ukraine. I’ve wondered about it.
However, the CIA still = ‘Americans’!! Not good long term for the USA. Keeps us pulled into it. Black Budgets continue, apparently.
I don’t really see these drones working and doing all this without Starlink data paths involved along the way. I doubt Elon has the control over data the way he’d like.
Thus showing why we need tighter regulations in the U.S. on who can and who cannot drive the large 18-wheelers on our highways. Kudos to the Trump administration for bringing back the requirement that truck drivers be fluent in English.
> Ukraine and Russia do not want peace. <
A perhaps relevant quote from Hitler’s right-hand man, Hermann Goering:
“Naturally, the common people don’t want war ... All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country.”
