The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has issued a "severe" geomagnetic storm watch for Sunday into Monday. As a result of the storm, the Northern lights may be visible across the United States Sunday night, with states as south as Alabama and southern California being able to views the colorful phenomenon.
Rob Steenburgh, science and operations officer at the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, joins LiveNOW's Austin Westfall to break down what a geomagnetic storm is, why it's labeled "severe," and what the public can expect to experience.

Just my crummy luck. An opportunity to see the lights and it’s cloudy. GRRRRR The last time they were visible in TN, I couldn’t see more than a faint haze but my camera caught them.
My thoughts exactly. Still, to have any chance of seeing it you need to get away from all the light pollution from towns and cities.
If I ever see the northern lights at home in the Orlando area, I know it will be time to dig in for an aftermath worse than a hit from a Cat 5 hurricane.
I’m in the country and have dark skies. The lights were just faint, but the camera has a night setting that works really well.
But it definitely takes a clear night and I don’t have that tonight. Dang it!
When we had the lights here, people in FL had them too. Pretty much the same as here though. Couldn’t really see them with the naked eye but caught them with their cameras.
If either of us sees them as clearly as they do way up north —— yeah, we’re in a HEAP o’ trouble! LOL
One can always hope. I really would like to see an aurora, with my own eyes.
I’d love to see “the dance” with my own eyes too. But we’d both have to travel to do it. And be ready to freeze. Can’t see them this time of year because it’s light all night so we’d have to wait until winter.
I’m not overly fond of cold. LOL
:) it’s on this list I’ll probably never get to do, like seeing the Pyramids.
Here is a description of the source of this 'storm'.
MAJOR SOLAR FLARE AND HALO CME: Big old sunspot 4100 finally exploded--and it was a doozy. On May 31st at 00:05 UTC, Earth-orbiting satellites detected an M8.2-class solar flare. The explosion lasted more than 3 hours:
A CME is heading straight for Earth--see below. NASA and NOAA models agree that it will strike our planet sometime on June 1st. The impact could spark a severe (G4-class) geomagnetic storm with auroras visible across Europe and many US states. This won't be as big as the famous May 2024 storm, but it could be one of the bigger events of Solar Cycle 25 if a severe storm materializes.
Same here. Seeing the pyramids has been on my list longer than seeing the aurora has. At this stage in my life, it’s pretty obvious neither will happen. Oh well, nice dreams anyway. :-)
Yeah I saw. it was one that was long in duration and aimed at the earth.
You never know, life can be strange sometimes :)
Yes, it can be. Takes a little luck, though, and mine’s not very good. At least there are several aurora live cams on YouTube to watch so not all is lost. Better ‘n nuttin’. LOL
Tomorrow: "They're coming to get you, Barbara!"
May ends with a windy day. June arrives with an Aurora! Picture taken from NWS Spokane near Airway Heights at 1215 AM PDT
And our forecast is actually for clearing tonight.
WOW!!!!!!!!
I have seen ONE really good one in my entire life.
I’ve seen a few where it’s just white and could be mistaken for clouds. The last one the whole rest of the country saw, we were very overcast for. I didn’t find out until later but if I had known, I would have drive the extra hour or two to the coast for clear viewing.
Screw that “severe geomagnetic storm” crap - I’d call it, “Awesome Solar activity demonstrates beauty of God’s creation”
There’s never sun, or rarely, where I live in south central PA. BUT I’ll get out and try to see them.
