U.S. Consumers Shake Off Gloom, Confidence Sees Biggest Boost In Four Years
Breitbart ^ | 05/27/2025 | John Carney

U.S. consumers just delivered a clear message: they’re not as worried as the experts thought.

The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index jumped by 12.3 points in May, the largest monthly gain in four years, as Americans grew more upbeat about the economy, the job market, and their own financial prospects. The reading came in at 98.0, up sharply from April’s 85.7, and blew past all forecasts by economists.

Econoday’s survey had a range of forecasts from 84.0 to 91.3, with the consensus at 87.3.

It wasn’t just a bounce—it was a breakout.

The Expectations Index, which measures how consumers see the next six months, soared by the most since 2011. That surge suggests that despite months of gloomy headlines, Americans are seeing signs of improvement ahead.

Even before the U.S. and China announced their May 12 tariff truce, confidence was already on the rise. After the deal—which temporarily slashed punitive tariffs and restarted negotiations—sentiment surged further.

"...they’re not as worried as the experts thought."

As James Taranto always said in his "Best of the Web Today" column in the Wall Street Journal's "OpinionJournal" section...

What Would We Do Without Experts?

I have some family members who are MSNBC devotees. Yesterday they were crying about how scared they are that the country is heading into a “Trump Depression” due to the dozen or so reasons MSNBC told them would cause a depression. The lunatic Left lives in a different world.

The city of Memphis is facing Hugh and series tax increases and layoffs of at least 25% (of bureaucrats). The fatigue has caught up with the cabal. They have wordsmithed their way into tight expensive corners and can’t escape. This summer is going to carry rage and chaos in the air along with the usual gunfire, carjacking, robberies, assaults, and civic mayhem.

I haven't even mentioned the $100 Million civil lawsuit against the city for the Tryee Nichols death. The city is essentially uninsurable and unable to issue bonds. They can't even maintain a mass transit system. The city trucks that spray mosquito fog haven't been running for years now, even though it's still a line-item on your monthly utility bill. The equipment broke and nobody will fix it. So now they claim it's a mosquito "monitoring" agency.

My neighbors and me have hired contracted services for policing, mosquito control, private schooling for our children, and sweep our own streets with a billy-goat machine.

Dow is up 600 at 12:04. Watching consumer confidence surge, despite a constant cascade of negative lies and BS, must be giving everyone in the media severe heartburn.

And oh.....the city jail and justice center is inoperable. Last year the criminal courts heard 24 trials in the entire year. In 2010 the rolling average was 247 cases. So now the prison is kinda free-range, while the government employees and bureaucrats stay locked up inside. No criminal is wanted to be seen inside a court or public building. Heck, they don't even ask for bail on murder charges anymore.

Embracing crime and chaos pays bigly for little to no labor output. Sure it cramps a few lifestyles of the political class, but that's what all the PR firm contracts are for.

Imagine how much greater of a boost if many of them were not listening to NPR!

“U.S. consumers just delivered a clear message: they’re not as worried as the experts thought.”

This is the newest figure but it’s just a continuation of the existing pattern. The press has been trying to keep everyone frightened but people know how their own lives are going.
