SEN. RON JOHNSON (R-WI) predicts he has enough Senate allies to hold up the "big, beautiful bill"

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), a fiscal hawk who has openly criticized House Republicans' reconciliation bill, predicted Sunday that there are enough in his flock to stop the process "until the president gets serious about spending reduction and reducing the deficit."

The big picture:

Pushing President Trump's "big, beautiful bill" through the House was far from a painless process, but the fiscal package now heads to the Senate, where the chamber is likely to make changes.

Johnson, who has not held back in his criticism of the bill championed by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), characterized the GOP-only legislation as "the Titanic" at a Politico event earlier this month.

Ron Johnson wants deeper cuts, and has repeatedly called for a return to pre-pandemic spending levels.

Driving the news:

"This is the weekend we honor the service and sacrifice of the finest among us," Ron Johnson said on CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday, referencing the Memorial Day holiday. He added: "I don't think they served in sacrifice to leave our children completely mortgaged."

He called for his fellow lawmakers to be "responsible," contending the "first goal of our budget reconciliation process should be to reduce the deficit."

As he noted, the legislation — which aims to extend Trump's first-term tax cuts, among other priorities — would do the opposite.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates an increase in the deficit of $3.8 trillion for the 2026–2034 period.

Actually I think the plunder problem is 100% RINO. They go along to get along because they are lazy dolts who just want free booze at the country club.

Ron Johnson is such a fiscal conservative he voted to/for:

Fund the war in Ukraine through the end of Joe Biden’s first term with a $40 billion aid package.

Confirm Merrick Garland to be Attorney General

Confirm Antony Blinken to be Secretary of State

Confirm Janet Yellen as Secretary of the Treasury

Keep spending on autopilot

Pass a $19 billion spending bill without funding for the border crisis

Surrender on the border wall; empower drug cartels and human traffickers

An $854 billion spending monstrosity that funds Planned Parenthood

Pass a promise-breaking cromnibus before the election

$1.1 Trillion Spending Bill for Democrat Priorties

Lack of regular order necessitates CRs.

You’re aware, are you not, that we’ve been operating, in part or in whole, under CRs, for nearly thirty years:

“...all 12 regular appropriations bills haven’t been enacted on time since fiscal year 1997.”

https://govfacts.org/explainer/understanding-continuing-resolutions-vs-regular-appropriations/

Trump will get his One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Bill.

Then watch him impose regular order on Congress, once again. Brutally, and horrifically, if necessary.

If the GOP wants to fix the bill in the Senate(and I agree there are issues with it) THAN FIX IT..its not up to Trump to fix the bill, he’s not a member of Congress or Senate that’s their damn job, so stop complaining Ron and fix it, after all what is the end result, taxes going up, that guarantees the Dems win next November

Its funny how some in the GOP become “fiscally conservative” when a Republican is in the White House so they can go bitch to the media..meanwhile Johnson confirmed and did EVERY DAMN THING Biden’s regime wanted

Just an observation that we have been told so often. That Ron Johnson is a good conservative.

But if he is such a good conservative, why is he saying these things. Or I should say why isn’t he working to gain support for fixing problems he sees in the bill?

He’s not a Democrat who will just automatically vote no. As a conservative and a Republican and a Trump supporter, he should be working for solutions to get the bill passed. Why is he going on TV saying that there are enough votes to sink the bill?

There goes the Trump tax extension and tax cuts. Trump needs a fireside chat to let everyone know who is jeopardizing his agenda. I personally don’t give a hoot what Ron Johnson thinks. He supported SFBRAINS on all crazy spending.

Its because some in the GOP want Trump impeached that’s why..they hate his guts and everything he stands for so they “Pretend” to be Conservative now..they are always so darn conservative when Republicans are in power but the second a Dem comes in they pass every single damn thing the commies want

Dies this jerk pay the left wing press to call him a “fiscal hawk” in every piece?

He’s a phoney grandstander.

Amazing, isn’t it, how many “Republicans” discover their principles only when their own party takes power.

i agree with him that the country needs more spending cuts
but even more .. it needs more tax cuts

how about combining some additional spending cuts with some very popular tax cuts— to force the DNC block’s hand to supply more support for the bill?
ship
cut illegals’ free benefits (excepting vital health care requirements for individual cases on humanitarian grounds), ship the other 95% of them home (thereby reducing the welfare, education, policing, judicial, and prison expense burdens on the taxpayers), and end spending for unconstitutional activities like atf and federal interference with local public schools and environmental regulations that impact primarily-individual states alone. Add in a “no tax on pensions, interest, deferred compensation, state and local taxes, and sociable insecurity” provision. Along with, say, a 20 percent reduction in everybody’s federal income tax as a first step towards eliminating it entirely.
Or whatever.
Combining some spending cuts on patently unconstitutional probgrams... with some very popular taxpayer relief .... should succeed in peeling off some D votes

let’s get it done, already!

I live in DC. I actually know how the place doesn’t work. CRs are a survival skill. It demonstrates how DC operates at an absolute minimum level of competency. Any more incompetent and they wouldn’t be able to pass even a CR and then they would be caput. So they are at the evolutionary level of snails.
