At least 14 deaths have been confirmed from violent tornadoes that swept through the commonwealth late Friday evening into early Saturday morning, causing significant damage in the London and Somerset areas.
The wave of tornadoes flattened buildings, destroyed cars, kept thousands without power and collapsed homes and neighborhoods throughout southeastern Kentucky.
The worry was that after the sun rose on Saturday more could be found injured or dead. It was the worst tornado in Somerset since 2012 when six people were killed.
Gov. Andy Beshear issued a state of emergency Friday night in anticipation of the severe storms that were coming. The worst was realized as Kentucky faced yet another catastrophic weather event. The governor reported there were 14 deaths.

Update
BREAKING: At least 20 people killed by tornado in Laurel County, Kentucky - mayor tells WKYT
I’m in south central KY. We did get some serious winds. And not to sound callous (seriously), I’ve told my friends on the west coast that the difference between living in earthquake country and tornado country is that in the former it affects everyone when it happens. In the latter, you can be unharmed, as we were a few years ago, while your neighbor can lose four barns and 54 head of cattle, as my neighbor did at the same time - less than a quarter mile away.

I was watching Max Velocity last night, and even he was getting a bit emotional about it, so I knew it was going to be bad.
I’m in NE Ohio and about 11:30 p.m. we got some terrific wind through here...not much rain, though
Going to get another shot at more storms today I think.
It may be our turn tonight.
Had a beast of a storm roll through yesterday afternoon. It was certainly headed that way.
Yesterday was terrible. There were several tornadoes in Indiana as well. I was watching Ryan Hall most of the night and it seemed the “new tornado” warning kept blasting away every few minutes. My prayers go out to all affected.
Usually a tornado passes and things clear up fairly quickly, at least for the responders, but it just kept coming into Somerset for a good two hours after the original tornado.
My daughter texted me yesterday and said, Steve’s got his sleeves rolled up. It’s going to be a bad one. For those of you that don’t live in MO, Steve is the weather guy on CBS in Mo. When we lived in Troy, Illinois we would turn the TV to CBS to watch Steve. If you weren’t hyperventilating before, you were sure hyperventilating after watching good ole Steve. Well, we left Troy but three years ago my Daughter and her family moved to Mo. She had to call me to say, Steve’s still there.
The storms were going thorough just as the kids were getting dismissed from school. At least the school didn’t kick them out. They stayed until the storm had passed.
Wow
Be safe out there. We can’t buy a rain here in mid Nebraska.
