Rogue communication devices found in Chinese solar inverters Undocumented cellular radios also found in Chinese batteries U.S. says continually assesses risk with emerging technology U.S. working to integrate 'trusted equipment' into the grid
LONDON, May 14 (Reuters) - U.S. energy officials are reassessing the risk posed by Chinese-made devices that play a critical role in renewable energy infrastructure after unexplained communication equipment was found inside some of them, two people familiar with the matter said.
Power inverters, which are predominantly produced in China, are used throughout the world to connect solar panels and wind turbines to electricity grids. They are also found in batteries, heat pumps and electric vehicle chargers.
While inverters are built to allow remote access for updates and maintenance, the utility companies that use them typically install firewalls to prevent direct communication back to China. However, rogue communication devices not listed in product documents have been found in some Chinese solar power inverters by U.S experts who strip down equipment hooked up to grids to check for security issues, the two people said.
Over the past nine months, undocumented communication devices, including cellular radios, have also been found in some batteries from multiple Chinese suppliers, one of them said.
Reuters was unable to determine how many solar power inverters and batteries they have looked at.
The rogue components provide additional, undocumented communication channels that could allow firewalls to be circumvented remotely, with potentially catastrophic consequences, the two people said.
Both declined to be named because they did not have permission to speak to the media.
"We know that China believes there is value in placing at least some elements of our core infrastructure at risk of destruction or disruption," said Mike Rogers,

I take it you are thinking of Israeli pagers. I would add that if the US government had a way to detonate EV batteries, we're in just as much trouble.
There needs to be a multicountry task force created to identify, and then replace these inverter time bombs.

really these inverters should be first on the list of products that need to be produced at home. Oh and also, the USA should not import chinese solar cells. all purchases should be home grown.

Solar cell manufacturing was regulated out of the country. China didn’t have to comply with environmental regs making theirs a lot cheaper. We had little choice if we wanted solar power. The real problem with solar is that, regardless of where it’s made or what it costs to make, very few panels will make more power than it took to produce the panel. Spending a dollar to get 90 cents is stupid.
Yeah But - What if the chinese turn the solar arrays off at night?

Why would the Chinese bother with floating spy balloons over the USA when they can embed their spying equipment into millions of products?
This sounds like a huge business opportunity — sweeping and verifying anything imported from China is clean and not communicating to the mother ship.
