US says Trump and Putin needed for breakthrough in Ukraine peace talks

Top US diplomat Marco Rubio says he does not have high expectations for peace talks due to be held between Ukraine and Russia in Turkey and asserted that Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin needed to meet.

"It's my assessment that I don't think we're going to have a breakthrough here until President Trump and President Putin interact directly on this topic," he said, speaking after a meeting of Nato foreign ministers in southern Turkey.

Earlier in the day, Trump - who is visiting the Middle East - also suggested that significant progress in peace talks was unlikely until he and Putin met in person.

Asked by the BBC on board Air Force One if he was disappointed by the level of the Russian delegation, he said: "Look, nothing's going to happen until Putin and I get together".

This is getting interesting.

Sounds like this thing could be scripted by Linda McMahon, along with her husband, Vince McMahon of WWF fame.

Maybe we get to see Putin, Zelensky and Trump in three way, tag team cage fight.

Wonder who is going to end up getting their head shaved this time around .

Zelensky gets to leave the country whenever he wants, but he’s banned Ukraine men from the age of 18 to 60 from leaving the country. Z’s flown more in the past four years of war than Hitler did during WWII.

Silly stunt. He knew that neither Putin nor Trump would be there long before his plane took off.

But that photo goes with this CNBC headline:

Putin and Trump leave Zelenskyy in the dust, skipping peace talks in Turkey

https://www.cnbc.com/2025/05/15/putin-and-trump-wont-attend-peace-talks-with-ukraines-zelenskyy.html

Of course the CNBC article is misleading, wording it so it appears Putin offered to personally meet. He did no such thing, and merely offered direct talks between Russia and Ukraine.

Trump is being played. Putin is not interested in peace. Россия превыше всего

He doesn’t have anything better to do, he thinks jetting around the world meeting with leaders and collecting billions along with fancy dinners and hotels is his new job, and he loves it.

Interesting question . . . what common ground can there be?

Occasional prisoner exchange

Can’t think of anything else.

Yeah, right! The guy defending his country it the problem, not the one invading it. How do you reach that conclusion?

The poor, corrupted little man. He had many chances for a Peace deal…no one listens to him anymore, all the meaningful negotiations are going on without him.

Not only is he illegitimate, but also irrelevant.

I don’t have enough crayons to explain it to you.

Start with how he’s snubbed and bailed on agreements he has made with Trump.

Zelensky’s primary concern as the President of Ukraine it the defense of the country, not peace at the price of capitulation. There would be peace if Russia would just respect the sovereignty of Ukraine and go home. Why is that so hard to understand?

No his primary concern is his well-being and wealth. If he was serious about the people of his country he wouldn’t be acting the way he is.

As to your opinion about what Ukraine and Russia can do or should do that’s your opinion. My opinion is it’s not in my business and I shouldn’t be involved in it

No his primary concern is his well-being and wealth.

A common charge but one without factual basis. Rather it is a sign of frustration that Zelensky is thwarting Putin's ambitions, something that Putin and his supporters had thought was impossible and can still not understand.

You don’t seem to understand that Putin and Russian chauvinists of his ilk totally reject the mere idea of a Ukrainian national identity and culture independent from Russia. And they are perfectly willing to genocidally erase Ukraine and kill any Ukrainian who opposes them.

The president of Ukraine has literally nothing to do with their delusions. If Zelensky’s primary concern was “well-being and wealth” he would in fact be supporting Putin and his Kleptocratic regime because that is where the corrupt money is.

From Putin’s own mouth:

Article by Vladimir Putin ”On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians“

July 12, 2021

During the recent Direct Line, when I was asked about Russian-Ukrainian relations, I said that Russians and Ukrainians were one people – a single whole. These words were not driven by some short-term considerations or prompted by the current political context. It is what I have said on numerous occasions and what I firmly believe. I therefore feel it necessary to explain my position in detail and share my assessments of today’s situation.

First of all, I would like to emphasize that the wall that has emerged in recent years between Russia and Ukraine, between the parts of what is essentially the same historical and spiritual space, to my mind is our great common misfortune and tragedy. These are, first and foremost, the consequences of our own mistakes made at different periods of time. But these are also the result of deliberate efforts by those forces that have always sought to undermine our unity. The formula they apply has been known from time immemorial – divide and rule. There is nothing new here. Hence the attempts to play on the ”national question“ and sow discord among people, the overarching goal being to divide and then to pit the parts of a single people against one another......
