EU plans to end Russian gas imports by end of 2027

The European Commission has published a "roadmap" outlining its plans to end Europe's reliance on Russian energy in the coming years.

Under the plans, imports of all Russian gas and liquefied natural gas to European Union member states will be banned by the end of 2027.

"No more will we permit Russia to weaponise energy against us... No more will we indirectly help fill up the [Kremlin's] war chests," European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jorgensen said in a news conference in Strasbourg on Tuesday.

In response to the plans, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told the Reuters news agency on Tuesday that Europe was "shooting itself in the foot".

The EU vowed to end its energy relations with Russia after Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

A set of legislative proposals will be tabled in June asking all EU member states to make "national plans" to phase out Russian gas, nuclear fuel and oil imports, according to the European Commission.

EU member states must submit strategies under the plans for replacing Russian oil imports by the end of 2027.

Countries have also been asked to outline strategies for ending their reliance on Russia for uranium, enriched uranium and other nuclear materials.

The EU hopes to move away from Russian gas by "enhancing energy efficiency, accelerating the deployment of renewable energy and diversifying supplies", the European Commission said.

While EU dependence on Russian oil, gas and nuclear fuels has decreased significantly since Putin's invasion of Ukraine, the bloc still imports a significant quantity of its energy from Russia.

According to the report, EU gas imports from Russia have decreased from 45% in 2021 to 19% in 2024.

The share of Russian oil imports has also shrunk from 27% at the beginning of 2022 to 3% now.

According to leaked documents, the proposal is set to be unveiled in June. It would ban all new Russian gas contracts and spot purchases by the end of 2025. It would also phase out existing contracts entirely by the end of 2027. In addition, energy firms would be required to disclose the terms of any remaining Russian supply deals. Member states would have to submit national phase-out plans by 2025.

Importantly, this is not a sanctions package. To bypass vetoes from countries like Hungary and Slovakia, Brussels is using trade and energy market mechanisms that allow for majority voting instead of requiring unanimous approval.

To reduce the risk for companies, Brussels is also exploring legal tools that would let them exit long-term “take-or-pay” contracts without triggering penalties or arbitration. Many firms still pay under these deals even when they decline delivery, due to old agreements with Gazprom.

Although pipeline deliveries from Russia have dropped sharply, falling from 40% of EU supply in 2021 to under 13% today, Russian LNG has crept up. France, Belgium, and the Netherlands have been among the biggest importers, drawing criticism that the EU’s energy divorce is far from complete.

The roadmap also includes plans to reduce dependence on Russian nuclear fuel and parts, which are still used in aging Soviet-era reactors across Eastern Europe.

Most of the EU is insanely “green” in their energy outlook. So how will they replace the energy from Russian natural gas? My sources within the EU tell me it will involve unicorns and treadmills.

And why did they import Rusky energy in the first place ?

Because they sacrificed thier domestic "legacy" energy capability for Gaia and replaced it with unreliable, using their road map to NetZero ...

Hope y’all enjoy the dark, arseholes. You let your little puppet dictator from Uk destroy a pipeline — according to Sweden. Now, you want to stamp yer little feet and cut off all physical access even if everything is settled.

Freeze to death.

These people learned nothing from recent blackout in Spain and Portugal, which also affected parts of France and Belgium.

The EU will not be around in its current state by 2027. The are in recession, soon to be in depression…..broke, busted, and disgusted.

Trump warned them about 6-7 years ago against Russia “weaponizing energy against” them. Too bad they laughed him off. As of last year, EU spent more money buying Russian energy than they gave to supporting Ukraine. The EU is the joke and Trump gets the last laugh.

Now that Trump has removed Biden’s noose from the neck of the LNG industry, they can buy it from us again.

The EU is lying to its citizens.

There is no reasonably priced replacement or delivery system for Russian oil. So EU countries will still be buying it, as it is now, even if it is from third-party sources and paying more for it.

EU is kinda like a junkie.

Bad mouthing their dealer, but still filling his pockets buying his wares.

As I remember Trump said as much to Merkel in his first term.

You said the U.S. would not be around in its present state in 2026.

Are you still sticking with Socrates?
