Why Is Russia Sending Assault Troopers Into Battle On Crutches?
Forbes ^ | 6 May 2025 | David Hambling

It is no secret that Russia ‘recycles’ wounded soldiers, sending them back to the front line as soon as they are mobile. Commanders have made sure that getting wounded is not a ticket out of danger. But now we are seeing more extreme cases, with soldiers still on crutches or even in wheelchairs being pushed forward in assaults.

What is behind this bizarre phenomenon? There may be method behind this gruesome madness, but there are competing explanations.

It would be easy to dismiss this sort of claim as Ukrainian propaganda. Except that apart from the many cases captured on drone video, there are also many appeals on Russian social medias as the soldiers themselves plead for intervention by senior commanders, with troops on crutches complaining that they are expected to go into combat while completely unfit for action.

In one video, a direct appeal to Putin posted by a group of about 50 men from the 26th Tank Regiment of the 47th Guards Tank Division, the soldiers say that they are being sent into combat without the standard 45-day medical leave. Some are still in casts or on crutches.

It brings to mind Monty Python’s “Walker Brigade.”

The answer is that Putin is evil. The attitude is that they would prefer that these men die rather than pay them for being maimed and crippled in combat. The dead are left as carrion or incinerated so the government can classify them as MIA and not KIA to avoid payments to their families. This is life in Russia, a choice Ukrainians have rejected.

If they are not killed, the Russian government would have to provide them with rehabilitation, financial support, and pensions. They don’t have the funds to cover millions of crippled veterans.

Agreed. If I understand history correctly, it’s pretty much a standard military strategy of Russia to try to win by sheer numbers.

“Why Is Russia Sending Assault Troopers Into Battle On Crutches?”

When a war is important enough to a country, people who have been injured still DEMAND to be sent to the front lines. Many THOUSANDS of Americans did the same in WW2...but then Forbes wasn’t around then, I guess.

The article describes the most likely reasons why they are used and why they are sent to their deaths to avoid financial obligations to them.

I see you didn’t bother going to the website and hearing the Russians soldiers in their own words confirm this. I think you’re the one who’s a propagandist..

Is the parade over? Will it be bombed? That would make a difference.

Next-is there censorship there or do people support him 100%?

I see this a propaganda. I can see WWII Germany recycling wounded soldiers back to the front because they were losing badly and had no other options.

The Ruskies are not losing and have plenty of options left.

If you’re talking about Europe, then YES there is certainly censorship - I believe that there are 30 people getting thrown in jail DAILY for social media postings. As to whether people support Prime Minister Stamler 100%, I’d say they’d claim that, if they know what’s good for them.
