Germany's conservative leader Friedrich Merz narrowly lost a vote in the Bundestag to become the next chancellor in an unexpected setback that plunges Europe's largest economy into political uncertainty. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), which finished second in the most recent election, demanded fresh elections after Merz's loss, the first time in German history that a chancellor-designate has failed to win in the first round of voting.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
There is hope for Germany after all.
Merz needed 316 Bundestag votes (between his CDU/CSU Party and the left-of-center SPD Party....they had 328). So he missed it with 310...meaning 18 people didn’t vote with their party.
2nd vote planned this afternoon. By rules, there could be a 3rd vote (rules kinda suggest a couple of days of cooling off). In the 3rd vote....simple majority is required (meaning lesser threshold). However, it’s possible that another 10-to-20 votes might swing away from Merz.
In the 3rd attempt...if failing, then the President would call for a new public election. I’d assume mid-to-late July, and Scholz remains as Chancellor until then.
Lot more theatrical crap, if the 2nd/3rd votes fail. Lets see how this plays out.
Just if anyone was wondering....probably 30-to-40 percent of CDU/CSU voters are fairly disenchanted with Merz and how the coalition agreement reads.
Germany was having trouble, what a sad sad story....
Well, now I know what today’s earworm is going to be.
So Merz is the "conservative" and AfD is "far right" or "extreme right". Gotta love that Newsweak spin.
Merz had crafted a “read my lips” situation that really pissed off everyone. After running on being fiscally responsible and stopping leftist spending he turned around and supported the the biggest expenditures on liberal nonsense their government has ever seen. There is a lot of buyers remorse for voting for the Blackrock candidate and many more voters have already left CDU-CSU for AfD.
Lol. Handed that on a silver platter!
