TRUMP EFFECT: Mercedes to Shift More Vehicle Production to U.S.
Whitehouse.gov ^ | May 1, 2025 | The Whitehouse

Today, Mercedes-Benz announced it will move production of another vehicle to the U.S. — the latest result of President Donald J. Trump’s relentless pursuit of American manufacturing dominance.

The automaker will produce the vehicle at its Tuscaloosa, Alabama, plant following signals earlier this year that the company will make additional investment in its U.S.-based operations.

Mercedes isn’t the only automaker onshoring production as President Trump incentivizes making things in America again:

A Mercedes, built in Tuscaloosa. That sounds awesome. Impossible to work on, temperamental, built with Alabama craftsmanship.... and the profits go back to Germany!

What are you complaining about.

They are adding Jobs to our Manufacturing sector.

Some people just need to find pea-picking something to complain about.

Nissan and VW have plants in TN. GM builds trucks 15 miles south of me in TN.

My Mercedes-Benz was built in Alabama and hasn't given me an ounce of trouble in five years.

Best not to live in Anecdote-Land. The Internet tells you lots of false stories.

The emerging electric vehicle sector has created a need for new assembly lines to be built, they might as well be built here.

Unlike some people here I do not diss electric cars because they do have a place.

I do not own one, and probably will never, but never say never.

I remember when the first white led bulbs were made, I have some of the earliest (dim) led flashlights.

Back then I excitedly showed my uncle and told him led was the future and he was totally unimpressed.

Now all the light bulbs in his house are led and the bulbs in his cars as well.

Can you imagine if someone would produce a rolling sled with modular batteries so you could specify the length you wanted, and then have custom coach builders who would create a custom body that would bolt that sled.

yes you could have custom one off builds, but you could also create mass market builds.

Consider what Musk did with a lotus body for his first roadster.

Those and some other 100 companies are looking to expand investments and/or build facilities here. You folks who don't agree with Trump's tariffs just don't get industry. We are heading to a Golden Age of US manufacturing and countless jobs. As President Trump talks to each Nation about no tariffs, just watch how this plays out.

He is going to turn much of the World into a level playing field regarding trade and unfair tariffs. Just watch! Mark the words of an owner of 3 different small companies. I know how to read a Balance Sheet and a Profit and Loss statement and what expenses should be eliminated. Tariffs against exporting out products with no reciprocity is simply not fair trade.

Amazing what happens when a nationalist leader is elected, vs a ‘globalist’ leader.

/s

And somehow all of this is bad to the left. Hard to call them ‘Americans.’

Alabama has been an industrial state since before the Civil War. Except for the black belt, coastal areas and the Tennessee Valley the soil is nasty red clay.

Hence the shift to industry a century and a half ago.

Mercedes started production there in 1997. Maybe you don't believe southern workers can produce quality automobiles? VW is near Chattanooga, BMW in South Carolina, and a host of other automakers have shifted production to southern states for decades now.

Southerners are perfectly capable of high quality manufacturing as this experience has proven. If you don't like thought of Mercedes making any money with US manufacturing, please be consistent and demand that Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, Nissan and all the rest of the transplants also shut down their US operations. Sure, that will devastate the economy and destroy millions of jobs, but you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that American consumers have less choice and can only buy high priced (tariffs) imports or native-owned production (a strategy that has worked so well in places like India... if your goal is to remain poor and backwards.)

I usually enjoy your posts, but this particular post is, to be blunt, ignorant and includes the old and tired Anti-Southern bigotry.

The Tuscaloosa Mercedes plant has been in operation since 1997 and has been very successful. I have a relative who has worked there since day one and has a terrific position in the plant’s office. His son is now employed with the company and they are paying his way through college.

The vehicles manufactured in Tuscaloosa are excellent. Your slur was completely out of line.

I heard somewhere that there is not one Ford F-150 pickup in Germany. Is this true?

Impossible to work on

Maybe for a Ford mechanic.

temperamental

Not really.

built with Alabama craftsmanship

The people of Alabama now want your name and address.

and the profits go back to Germany!

So what! The wages will stay in Alabama. And soon there will be tons of certified Mercedes mechanics opening shops
