U.S. Payoff for Ukraine Minerals Deal Faces Many Hurdles
NY Times ^ | May 2, 2025 | Marc Santora and Stanley Reed

...ending the war with Russia that has been raging for more than three years is only the first hurdle that will need to be overcome before the United States can realize any potential windfall.

Maps showing trillions of dollars of mineral deposits scattered across Ukraine — including in areas occupied by Russian forces — are based largely on outdated studies, and proper surveys could take several years to complete, experts said. The deposits might not be easy to extract; investors will need to pump billions into Ukraine to pull the resources from the earth.

And the nation’s energy infrastructure — which continues to be bombarded by Russian missiles and drones — will have to be repaired and upgraded to provide the enormous amounts of power needed to sustain mining operations. President Trump has said the United States stands to reap hundreds of billions of dollars from the deal, far higher than the $1 billion annually that Ukraine earns in royalties from its natural resources.

I don't see Ukraine anywhere on this list.

Western mineral industry experts look at foreign or closed government sources with skepticism and is so noted in the literature, however ball-park estimates can be made by cross referencing with actual production numbers and other factors.

The story goes that many of Ukraine’s mineral deposits are located in the “Ukrainian Shield,” a geological region spanning from Luhansk to Kharkiv. Specific regions like Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kirovohrad are known for their mineral resources.

The most touted legends are:
<><>”significant” reserves of various critical minerals
<><>lithium, titanium, uranium, rare earth elements, and graphite,
<><>along with other valuable metals and non-metallic minerals.
<><>resources vital for various industries, including electronics, energy, and defense.
<><>”substantial” lithium deposits, particularly in the Donetsk region, crucial for battery production.
<><>a “significant” share of the world’s titanium reserves, for aerospace, construction, etc
<><>”significant” uranium reserves, essential for nuclear power plants and nuclear weapons.
<><>”substantial” reserves of rare earth elements, vital for a wide range of high-tech applications.
<><>major graphite producer, in central and n/w regions, used in steel production, batteries, etc
<><>”significant” reserves: iron ore, manganese, nickel, cobalt, copper, lead, zinc, silver, other minerals.

Ukraine’s mineral resources are considered critical for global supply chains and are essential for various industries. The country’s mineral wealth has attracted significant attention and investment, with deals being made to access and exploit these resources.

Actually the so called “rare” earth are not so rare, what’s makes it rare is the process of mining and extracting is extremely toxic and creates pollution concerns.

China is the leading producer of rare earth not because they have more than other countries, just that they are most callous about environmental damage that mining them causes.

Getting Iraq’s oil to finance our invasion of them never worked out, I doubt any deal with the corrupt nation of Ukraine will either.

So, in other words, this whole show is - at least for the foreseeable future - a fantasy.

Note to the gay-dancing actor in a fake GI Joe uniform Zelenskyyyy™ : Your greasy con will never drag the US into war with Russia. No Americans will unwillingly die to protect your hyper-corrupt country or the scumbags who run it and make bank off its nefarious activities.

Trump and Vance have your number you sick, grifting pig.

If American companies are doing business with Ukraine on site at numerous places Russia had best not attack those sites it would be an act of war.

Well we have been supporting Ukraine with munitions and NATO troops so we are already at War technically with Russia and all targets in Ukraine are fair targets, as well as D.C. right now.

The last time Congress declared War was in December 1941. We get others to do our fighting. Vietnam was never a declared war, it was a CIA Covert Op from the very beginning.

All the more evidence that this is a bad idea. The Ukes could pull off a false flag to get us into a hot war with Russia over Ukraine. Right on their border.

Ukraine - a giant sinkhole of corruption. I don’t have a good feeling about this.

Do you know where Ukraine ranks on the international corruption scale?

Ukraine has problems with corruption due to its historical association with kleptocratic Russia. Putin’s regime has done everything it can to continue that tradition. Putin has meddled in Ukraine since occupying the Kremlin over 20 years ago.

We know that in 2014 Ukraine was ranked worst than Russia but that since then Ukraine has steadily improved and ranks at 105 today while Russia has gotten worse in corruption and ranks 154th, a steady decline since 2014.

“Do you know where Ukraine ranks on the international corruption scale?”

No. In fact, I didn’t even know anyone had compiled such a scale.

Post 18 mentions it, that sort of data is important and has been collected and measured for a very long time.

In 2015 Russia was ranked as less corrupt than Ukraine.

In 2015 Russia was at 119 and Ukraine at 130.

Ukraine has steadily improved and ranks at 105 today while Russia has gotten worse in corruption and ranks 154th, a steady decline since 2014.
