The Illinois Board of Higher Education suspended its state-wide diversity, equity and inclusion scholarship program this month after the Justice Department threatened to sue. Attorney General Pam Bondi said she is “committed to rooting DEI out of American institutions, including in the education system.” She should turn to the University of California system.
The UC Board of Regents oversees two main diversity programs: the President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, or PPFP, and the Advancing Faculty Diversity Program, or AFD. PPFP was founded in 1984 to recruit “women and minority Ph.D. recipients” to the UC faculty, and its 2024 cohort includes no white men. AFD, established in 2016, funds initiatives designed to recruit and enhance the retention of underrepresented faculty.
Both programs purport to be race- and sex-neutral—ostensibly compliant with California’s 1996 ban on racial preferences at public universities. PPFP insists that instead of selecting for particular identity groups, it “seeks applicants with . . . the perspective that comes from their non-traditional educational background or understanding of the experiences of members of groups historically underrepresented in higher education.”
Documents obtained via Freedom of Information Act requests tell a different story. At UC San Diego in 2020-21 and 2021-22, blacks, Hispanics and Native Americans comprised 16% of applicants and 17% of those interviewed in non-AFD faculty searches. In AFD searches, they made up 37% of applicants and 77% of those interviewed.
AFD searches favor specific races by design. An application from UCSD for a 2022 AFD grant stated that the money would be dedicated to hiring “scholars who identify as and/or work alongside Indigenous, Black and migrant communities.” It also noted that the school has “successfully leveraged” PPFP to “recruit Indigenous faculty” in the past.

The discrimination against White males is obscene.
For admission, you might as well chuck it and go to any of the surrounding states for an education: they won’t let you in.
The most expensive school in LA - Harvard-Westlake - can’t even get people into UC campuses. Reserved for “First Generation” - translation: illegal aliens or their offspring.
Close the UC and salt the dirt.
