Exclusive: Walmart expands support for American-made products
Axios ^ | April 29th, 2025 | Kelly Tyko

The big picture: Walmart announced a new "Grow with US" program and shared details of the upcoming 2025 Open Call to make it "easier for U.S.-based entrepreneurs to navigate the complexities of retail and bring their products to a national stage."

"We anticipate thousands of small businesses will take advantage of these free resources over the coming years," John Furner, Walmart U.S. president and CEO, told Axios.

Catch up quick: Walmart said in 2021 that it planned to spend an additional $350 billion by 2030 on items made, grown or assembled in the U.S., which the company estimated would help generate 750,000 jobs nationwide.

More than two-thirds of products sold in Walmart U.S. stores are "made, grown or assembled" in the country, company CFO John David Rainey said at the company's investment community meeting earlier this month.

"The third that we import comes from all over the world, but China and Mexico are the most significant," Rainey said.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

Prefer Walmart over Amazon, they may have seen the light.

2/3 of what they sell is American and they are starting a program to increase that (an additional $350bil per year).

Heavens be, is this Walmart resurrecting their “Made in the USA” campaign from the early 90s?

That would be wonderful news if true. But forgive my skepticism in the meantime.

Maybe they were waiting on Amazon to make their stupid mistake announcement.

Good on Walmart. Hope it happens.

Maybe Walmart just doesn’t want to be the next Sears, Roebuck & Co.

Yeah well . . . . history shows MIA has been more expensive, which is what Walmart attempted to reduce in the beginning.

We'll see.

Remember how Amazon tried to show the tariff cost on the receipt?

Here’s an idea. Why not do as I think Ebay does and filter in or our particular countries where the item is manufactured?

Filter out China and if you cannot find the item Made in America, filter in and see if you can find one made in Vietnam or whatever nation you wish to buy from.

Example search for olive oil from Italy.

Maybe a star next to the country if it’s a good trading partner with USA and thumbs down on high tariff nations such as China

After Sam Walton died, Wal-Mart forced many suppliers to move to China or be cut off.

Yet, Wal-Mart is a primary culprit in not having domestic producers.

They drove down pricing for domestic producers and suppliers below their cost margins. Cost margins those companies needed to continue operating in the US.

Yep, Wal Mart started this offshoring mess.

But their partners in this terrible crime were the Republicans in Congress. And pliable presidents of every stripe.
