Reuters) - Russian troops are trying to carve out a buffer zone in Ukraine's northeastern Sumy region, although so far without substantial success, the regional governor said on Tuesday. The Sumy region borders on Russia's Kursk region, where Russian forces have lately recaptured territory seized last year in the Ukrainian military's only major cross-border incursion of the war. Kyiv has said for months that it is concerned about Moscow's troops trying to advance into Sumy. Russia has said its forces have captured some territory there and have driven all Ukrainian troops out of Kursk.

Just keep fighting
Pretty much everyone involved wants to. The Russians don’t think they’ve won, the Ukrainians don’t think they’ve lost, Brussels and London are gung-ho on continuing their proxy war, China doesn’t care, and even Trump is still trying to salvage something for the United States.
So just carry on with the war.

The Russians are always “unsuccessful” but somehow the front keeps moving west in all areas. Pure propaganda.

Anybody that believes that, is a dunce.
Ceasefires are taken advantage of by all sides, and Russia would benefit the most..
In addition to Sumy Russia continues to push and advance along several areas of the Donbas
Same old, same old.
Take an inch, lose an inch. Eventually, Russia will have 'taken' so much of Ukraine, that their original control of 20% of Ukraine will have reached a whopping 20%.
Propaganda is a wonderful thing, for all sides.

Bloomberg reports that Witkoff pushed for a ceasefire along the frontlines in his recent meeting with Putin.
Putin rejected it & demanded Ukraine completely withdraws from the 4 regions Russia has annexed according to its constitution: Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia & Kherson.

It is my understanding that most of the important minerals that Ukraine has are under Russian Control
Also yesterday I read that Z has now agreed to it because the USA agreed to only count new weapon deliveries from this Point forward in the repayment calculations (fake news though?)

Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, April 28, 2025
Excerpt:
Russia is reportedly expanding its military infrastructure along its border with Finland and stockpiling new tanks, likely in preparation for future aggression against NATO ...
Russia is expanding military bases near Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia, and upgrading railway lines and other infrastructure along Russia's western border with NATO ...
Russia intends to form new divisions on the basis of existing brigades in the Leningrad Military District (LMD) in the coming years and that Russia is constructing new barracks and training grounds and upgrading warehouses and railways near Petrozavodsk to accommodate the future influx of personnel.
A senior Finnish military official stated that Russia is sending “almost none” of its newly produced tanks to the frontline in Ukraine, but is stockpiling the tanks for “later use.” ISW previously assessed that Russia's restoration of the MMD and LMD is part of a long-term restructuring effort to prepare for a potential future large-scale conventional war against NATO.

Putin is stuck. He can't go for a deal which says that he pushed an invasion for NOTHING. He would be run out of Russia for killing so many of Russia's young and sacrificing so much of the military readiness and tanking the economy.
Putin rejected it & demanded Ukraine completely withdraws from the 4 regions Russia has annexed according to its constitution: Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia & Kherson.
He can demand, but he's in no position to demand that which is not his nor Russia's. Those regions still belong to Ukraine and saying the regions have been annexed is putting the carriage in front of the horse.

Yes, Russia is advancing so much that they've kept the same original percentage that they took at the beginning of the war. In 10 years, they will have advanced so much more that they'll have taken the same 20%. IOW, get real!!!
Ukraine counterattacks and reclaims some of Russian advances but then Russia regroups , claims those areas back and Advances to new areas
Russia gains some and then loses some and then regains the same areas they had taken, and those same areas are then called gains. In fact, and as the world knows by now, Russia has retaken the same territory so many times, that they now know the landscape better than the original occupants. But it's still the same old territory they took originally.
So, yes, Russia keeps 'advancing' into the same land areas they took originally, and in fact, and according to the latest news, they now control about 19% of Ukraine, which is a whopping NEGATIVE 1% "more' than they took originally. Advancing backwards is not the same as advancing as the world understands it.

Putin is dumb, but I doubt that he also wants to push his country towards suicide.
Russia is expanding military bases near Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia, and upgrading railway lines and other infrastructure along Russia's western border with NATO .
Posturing and not to be taken seriously. Russia no longer has the military capacity to take on even a fraction of NATO which includes the U.S.
Russia intends to form new divisions on the basis of existing brigades in the Leningrad Military District (LMD) in the coming years and that Russia is constructing new barracks and training grounds and upgrading warehouses and railways near Petrozavodsk to accommodate the future influx of personnel.
Still a lot of posturing. Russia is now a bigger paper tiger than it's ever been. Russia's only military threat the remains, is the nuclear arsenal.
A senior Finnish military official stated that Russia is sending “almost none” of its newly produced tanks to the frontline in Ukraine, but is stockpiling the tanks for “later use.”
New or used, tanks are just sitting ducks. And Putin knows it. Might as well send a harshly worded letter to NATO.
ISW previously assessed that Russia's restoration of the MMD and LMD is part of a long-term restructuring effort to prepare for a potential future large-scale conventional war against NATO.
Maybe they can get N.Korea to send more mini-soldiers to build up their conventional fighting force. Russia can only threaten, but they can no longer afford to sustain a long-lasting war. In fact, they're in danger of losing the current war they're in now.

Putin is only dumb if you think running a country for decades, can be done by a stupid person while embezzling billions.
Putin does not care how many Russians have to die to retake the old Soviet borders. Suicide? What do you call meat wave attacks? Vacations?
Your “posturing” assumption is based on Finish intel. So they must be seeing and reporting lots of fake stuff to their agencies? Like the intel says, they are no longer supplying the newer stuff to UKR, but putting it into storage. Why?
A paper tiger that does not care how many troops die to achieve a few meters advance. Tanks are useful for transportation & artillery.
They will only lose militarily if they they run out of people to conscript and recruit, including North Koreans, Chinese & Africans. Or their economy totally collapses.
With both China, Iran, & NK supplying troops, shells, guns, missiles & drones their is nothing paper about their military.
PS: the NK troops have learned a lot, and are coming back for more and with another shipment of 10,000 troops. Nothing mini about them - just ask a Korean War vet.

Putin is as smart ad Kamala and Biden. Even the dumbest people in the world can run for office, or run the office with the use of force against his enemies or opponents. Nobody in Russia dares to go against him or he/seh will end up dead within minutes. Putin is like the Mafia who rule with force. Any dummy can do that. Real leaders don't need to use force to lead.
Putin does not care how many Russians have to die to retake the old Soviet borders. Suicide? What do you call meat wave attacks? Vacations?
Putin can put his country into suicidal missions because he doesn't care and won't be in the front-kines himself. he's a psychopath and has no feelings or emotions about sending people to their deaths.
Your “posturing” assumption is based on Finish intel.
Never even thought about Finnish intelligence. Putin Putin knows that his military is very lacking, and so he can only pretend that he's got a mighty military, aka: posturing.
So they must be seeing and reporting lots of fake stuff to their agencies?
The 'fakery' is very abundant on Putin's side.
A paper tiger that does not care how many troops die to achieve a few meters advance. Tanks are useful for transportation & artillery.
Russia no longer uses tanks on the Ukrainian front. They are useless and easy targets.
They will only lose militarily if they they run out of people to conscript and recruit, including North Koreans, Chinese & Africans. Or their economy totally collapses.
All of those negative have already been happening to Russia, but Putin cannot admit defeat of lack of equipment or personnel. He dares not tell the 'enemy' that he has run our of anything.
With both China, Iran, & NK supplying troops, shells, guns, missiles & drones their is nothing paper about their military.
Those things are not happening; not since those others can tell that Russia is not gaining ground and might have to pull out eventually. And those other countries are having a very hard time themselves, especially since Trump is making their economies tank.
PS: the NK troops have learned a lot, and are coming back for more and with another shipment of 10,000 troops. Nothing mini about them - just ask a Korean War vet.
They are not going to be targets for Putin's war. They are useless. The only thing they have as an 'advantage' is that they're mini-sized and hard to target. But it's very doubtful that N.Korea is simply going to send meat to the Putin meat-grinder. Putin is dumb and Kim is not going to join him in the dummy's war.
