Trump Vows to Veto GOP Sen. Paul Law to Curb Tariff Power

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., reportedly said he is "a Republican and a supporter of President Donald Trump," but said he has the votes in the Senate to strip the presidential authority on tariffs to give it to what Trump says is a do-nothing Congress.

Trump has frequently warned Congress about reducing the authority of the president and forcing America to do nothing as Congress has for decades – failing to balance free-and-fair foreign trade or rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse in massive government spending that Paul himself is against.

"This resolution would undermine the administration's efforts to address the unusual and extraordinary threats to national security and economic stability, posed by the conditions reflected in the large and persistent annual U.S. goods trade deficit," the Trump administration's Office of Management and Budget wrote in a memo hitting at Paul's bipartisan legislation, Politico reported Monday.

"There can be no doubt that S.J. Res. 49 — if passed — would undermine U.S. national and economic security. If S.J. Res. 49 were presented to the president, he would veto it."

Paul's bipartisan bill, includes supporters who are seen as anti-Trump Republicans in the Senate: Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine; Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska; and former Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

The White House has also previously threatened to veto legislation from Sens. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., and Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, that would have strengthened Congress' role in deciding tariff policy.

Notably, Paul is breaking from the party, but House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is reluctant to bring Paul's effort to the floor in the lower chamber.

"GOP Sen. Rand Paul says he expects to have enough votes in Senate to pass resolution to effectively block Trump's tariffs," CNN's Manu Raju wrote on X. "

While Paul's key argument against Trump tariffs is that he considers it a tax on Americans that he opposes, Trump said the billions taken in on tariffs could help end income taxes on American families making less than $200,000 per year.

Interesting story about Rand Paul just out:

Wendy Patterson @wendyp4545 5h
What? Rand Paul’s wife Kelly bought stock in 2020 in a covid drug?
That her husband Rand Paul was on the committee of who received a private briefing on covid?
That she bought the Stock when there were only 14 cases in the US?
AND Rand Paul forgot to hit send which led him to fail to disclose the Stock purchase?
But But But I thought Rand Paul was honest, a choir boy in the Senate...
That they never bought Stock until THIS Stock?

When you believe that the politician that you like is on the up and up, make sure you check out what their Spouse is up to because Kelly Paul isn’t the church going innocent that they make her out to be.
She works off and on for a lobying firm. She has worked as a consultant for The Strategy Group for Media.
@RandPaul
Needs to back off of his Tariff Bill because the public will learn how deep Rand is in bed with Democrats.

Somehow, I don’t think it was a vow.

It was probably an off-the-fisticuff remark.

Of all of the things that Congress should be writing actual laws about, Rand Paul picked this one, which seems to be more along the lines of "who gets the power" rather than an actual benefit to America.

Besides wondering what's going on with Rand Paul, when is Congress going to start writing new laws to support the MAGA agenda? It seems like Donald Trump is the only lawmaker in DC who cares about the American people first.

Well said. Job #1 for the Republican Congress should be to get voter fraud under control. Because if that isn’t fixed, in the long-term nothing else will really matter.

Anyone who votes to support Rand’s bill is looking for a primary opponent & I will be watching to donate to those primary opponents and promote their campaigns.

What kind of pond slime wants to leave Americans being taken advantage of by the entire world?

What kind of trough feeder wants to allow our remaining industries and small businesses to be forced into bankruptcy.

This is unconscionable. It is in essence treasonous since it leaves America a sitting duck if a war occurs. Supply chains controlled by America’s enemies in a time of war is a situation directly contravening these Congress critters’ oath of office.

Paul needs to shut up. Leaving the ship on the course it now is on is not workable and a trip to failure. The only way to help our economy is to get it back to where it works without being strangled by foreign countries. It also is a major netional security problem that needs to be put back in line. And the president has the authority to do it this way event hough congress republicans (?) won’t do it.

“Although the US Constitution grants Congress the sole authority to levy taxes, including tariffs, Congress has passed laws allowing the President to impose tariffs for national security reasons unilaterally.”

Rand is blossoming into the same a$$hole that his father was. With friends like him, you don’t need enemies.

Right. Rand Paul totally gets that federal deficit is a ticking time bomb. He is perhaps the only person in DC who does.

But for some reason he is blind to the equal danger of outsourcing our industry to other countries.

How can he see one, but miss the other is quite puzzling.

I’ve been a fan of Paul for a long time, hate to see him doing this. If Trump’s tariffs are a ‘tax on Americans’ what are the World’s tariffs against America?

Paul is the enemy. He is siding with the democrats on multiple fronts to defeat the President. He is NOT our friend. Primary him out in the next election...

I am not a lawyer, but should this law pass, it would establish a congressional record of a conflict between the executive and legislative branch over the authority to enact duties and tariffs. This conflict could result in a judicial challenge, where Article 1, Section 8 would be “Exhibit A”.

I asked GROK about the issue, and it gave a very long answer. The conclusion was:

“S.J. Res. 47 could provide a foundation for a Supreme Court challenge to restore congressional authority over tariffs by highlighting the constitutional conflict and economic harms of Trump’s actions. It best supports standing for private plaintiffs (businesses or consumers) who can demonstrate direct injury from the tariffs, though congressional standing remains tenuous. The resolution’s legal impact would be amplified if paired with a successful legislative push or aligned with existing lawsuits questioning the IEEPA’s scope. However, political and judicial barriers—veto threats, Republican majorities, and court deference—make a successful challenge a long shot absent broader momentum or a favorable lower-court ruling. For now, the resolution serves as a critical signal of bipartisan resistance, potentially paving the way for future legal or legislative efforts.”
