President Trump Signs EO To OVERHAUL College Accreditation System
WLT Report ^ | April 24, 2025 | Kaley

Posted on 04/23/2025 9:58:16 PM PDT by Dr. Franklin

President Trump signed an executive order this afternoon that targets the broken college accreditation system.

Basically, colleges and universities become accredited through third-party agencies, which play a big role in determining whether these higher education institutions can receive federal funds.

And, President Trump [requires] these college accrediting agencies to change their criteria to prioritize merit over woke ideologies.

...

Colleges and universities are accredited to ensure they meet basic standards by third-party entities, not the federal government, though the Department of Education decides which accrediting agencies to recognize. The accreditation process has broad implications since the government uses it to determine which schools are allowed to participate in federal student aid programs, which distribute billions in student loans and grants.

"The executive order directs the Department of Education to “hold accountable” any college accreditors that “fail to meet the applicable recognition criteria or otherwise violate Federal law” — including by terminating or suspending the accreditors’ federal recognition. It specifically singles out accrediting agencies that require schools to “engage in unlawful discrimination … under the guise of ‘diversity, equity, and inclusion’ initiatives.” The order also says the Department of Education should start recognizing new college accreditors.

The Trump administration believes accreditation entities have become too focused on “woke ideology” instead of results, White House staff secretary Will Scharf said. The executive order Mr. Trump signed affects law schools and graduate programs as well.

“The basic idea is to force accreditation to be focused on the merit and the actual results that these universities are providing, as opposed to how woke these universities have gotten,” Scharf said ahead of Mr. Trump signing the executive order. “So we’re setting up new accreditation pathways, we’re charging the Department of Education to really look holistically at this accreditation mess and hopefully make it much better.”"

Without Congressional action, the U.S. Dept. of Education will remain. President Trump has just identified the one area federal law that can be managed to cut the finances of the woke and incompetent leftist universities: accreditation. Revoke federal recognition of their accreditation and no more student loans for them. It's a start.

Democrats will lose even more seats in US Senate in 2026, and with voter ID, very low Democrats approval ratings in the congress etc, Democrats may lose the House too.
Meanwhile Murkowski may lose in Alaska too if voting reform is passed.

Enough with the EO s already. Work with Congress to get some of what you have done made into law, otherwise the next president can undo everything.

EO's are a good first step. Congress needs to actually want to solve problems, and when the Congresscritters are all taking money from the wrong people, they are disinclined to even see a problem. Trump can't work with people who have the primary power to effect change, but decline to use it. Any GOP rep in Congress can draft legislation making the EO's permanent. They have yet to do so.

The most important reform would be to require colleges to co-sign student loans.

Ladies and Gents...we have no congress.

We have many illegitimate Congresscritters holding office due to rigged elections. That may be the most important thing Trump has to clean up before the 2026 midterm elections. Trump can take action by EO and then make enshrining the EO into law a political issue. The RINOs fail to act on that agenda at their political peril.

I would like to see them receive an A-F grade based on outcomes.

What percentage of admitted students graduate?
What percentage of graduates get jobs in their field upon graduation?
What percentage of graduates earn enough of a salary that they can pay back their loans?
What are the outcomes 10 years after graduation?
How about 20 years after graduation?

Then compare all of these factors to the price of the education to come up with a grade.

The federal government will help fund schools with an A-D grade to varying degrees. The federal government will actively shut down schools with an F grade as predatory institutions.

There should be a value scale on the majors that colleges offer. The hard sciences get a five per credit hour, and the woke social classes get a one or a two. Upon graduation, the hard sciences would have approx a 600 real world value, and the woke majors a 150 score.

And make the woke classes all elective.

How about NO federal funding to private educational institutions, and let the institutions determine accreditation among themselves however they please.

I'm not Libertarian on all issues, but this is one they get right.

That is a determination for Congress, not POTUS. Until Congress changes the law, POTUS can only nibble at the edges with EOs. Biden's sweeping student loan forgiveness should provide a baseline of which universities produce degrees that are marketable in the job market and which ones don't. As long as federal money is being handed out, the executive branch should be able to determine that. It's not a perfect solution, but it is a start.

Trumps every action will now be challenged by left wing or blob NGOs

And will have to be adjudicated thru the courts

Until or unless SCOTUS trims their power or Trump defies them

Alito needs to do a reach out

Considering the billion in losses to the federal government, any change that holds universities accountable for poor student performance repaying their loans would be an improvement. When students receive a worthless degree, or can't complete the degree due to deficiencies with the university's program, everyone but the university that charged the tuition suffers. It's time to hold the universities accountable for the problem, not their victims.

This could be huge. As were the disparate impact EOs, including re: discipline in public schools.
