Alphabet’s (GOOGL.O) Google illegally dominated two markets for online advertising technology, a federal judge said on Thursday, dealing another blow to the tech titan in an antitrust case brought by the U.S.
U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema in Alexandria, Virginia, ruled that Google unlawfully monopolized markets for publisher ad servers and the market for ad exchanges which sit between buyers and sellers. Antitrust enforcers failed to show the company had a monopoly in advertiser ad networks, she wrote.
The ruling could allow prosecutors to argue for a breakup of Google’s advertising products. The U.S. Department of Justice has said that Google should have to sell off at least its Google Ad Manager, which includes the company’s publisher ad server and its ad exchange.
Google will now face the possibility of two different U.S. courts ordering it to sell assets or change its business practices. A judge in Washington will hold a trial next week on the DOJ’s request to make Google sell its Chrome browser and take other measures to end its dominance in online search.
Google used classic monopoly-building tactics of eliminating competitors through acquisitions, locking customers in to using its products, and controlling how transactions occurred in the online ad market, prosecutors said at trial.

The Googles, They Are Evil!

And yet conservatives , even many here, continue use and post YouTube videos while the exact same material is on Rumble giving google ad $$
I’n recent years , Google pulled ads from many conservative websites due to pressure from progressive groups
Google has 90%+ of search queries, so this development should come as no surprise.
Thanks for the reminder, Janet!
Right down to the Burkenstocks...
Why are ads a thing? I am online hours per day, and haven’t seen an ad in many years...Who is seeing ads? Who is responding to them??
Someone wants to control someone else.
I am online hours per day, and haven’t seen an ad in many years.
You may have your computer configured with applications that control or prevent the display of ads.
Who is seeing ads?
Many people who use a computer or smartphone.
Who is responding to them??
Persons and bots that elect to respond or are manipulated to do so.
I would literally have whichever authority in Google who ordered that or signed off on it hanged. No remorse.
I choose not to see them. Correct.
I still remember when Sergei Brin said people have to get over their antiquated notions of privacy.
It is not the ads. It is manipulating the search results so that only favored services and websites are shown, or at least the first ten pages. The first ten pages are sites that have paid Google for a spot in the front of the line. It no longer goes by “Rank” of most traffic hits like it used to.
And they promote their own services over others. Example Youtube... Go do a Goggle “video” search for a particular topic and out of more than five video services you would probably never get anything but Youtube videos, none from any of the other video domains.
OK, tried it, and yes, Google returns a ton of adds before showing any real search resluts.
I don’t use Google, so I don’t see this.
There is s problem with this too. Because a lot of the other search engines borrow from Google for their own results. A good honest search engine is hard to find anymore. Duck duck Go is full of ads and preferred sites... Startpage censors results, Bing is Communistic promotion, many of the others are just emulating Google results...
Thanks I am going back to Bing search. I have been using Bing for 5 years.... but gave Google a re-try.
Is anyone paying Bing to be at the top of search results? How about yahoo and duck duck go?
Yahoo and DDG both piggy back results from Google. But while DDG does have ads and relies on Google they do tend to have less bias results lower down the pages or next pages. Bing results tend to be biased towards the Communist causes. Bing is Microsoft so that kind of speaks for it’s self. Brave browser and search is coming around to be a good search engine and less bias because they use their own spiders and crawlers that search the web for content rather than borrow from others like Google. But it is taking time for them to collect all the massive amounts of content out there in order to catch up with all the others who have been crawling the web much longer.
Like I say it is a dilemma, The whole WWW is now pretty much nothing but a commercial and ad market place. In fact almost all search engines have eliminated all the “useful” information like repair manuals Etc. that use to be available for free and replaced them with vendors who will sell you that manual instead. It went from a very useful library full of valuable information to nothing but a commercial market place. And almost all of them but Brave and Startpage are priority biased towards giving only results for liberal businesses and liberal view points on issues. But I recently used Startpage and found it leans towards a priority of commercialism and marketplace too.
I honestly do not know how to win this battle against the online greed and biased politics... I am now to the point I am going to drop the whole “normal net” and find alternatives because it is now almost worthless anyhow. They have ruined it with their greed.
