Bobby Charles, a lawyer who served under several former Republican presidents, announced Tuesday he will run in the 2026 race to become Maine’s next governor.
Although his name is not broadly known in his home state, Charles has increasingly popped up as a rumored gubernatorial candidate in Republican circles while making radio and Fox News appearances. The Maine Republican Party also briefly floated him last year as someone to run against Democratic Attorney General Aaron Frey before lawmakers decided on another candidate.
His entrance into the race to succeed Gov. Janet Mills, a Democrat termed out of office next year, comes at a time when no well-known Republicans have launched bids yet and only Secretary of State Shenna Bellows has formally announced a run on the Democratic side.

It would be nice to take both Maine and NJ governorship from the left. It’s possible.
There are times it’s hard to tell where Maine ends and Canada begins. LOL
Seems high time that Maine at least tried Republican leadership.
Republican Paul LePage from 2011-2019. He was a good old fashioned Yankee from Bangor.
I exchanged emails with him and sent his info to my Maine family
Ranked choice voting makes getting a Democrat for a governor almost a certainty in Maine.
In the movie, white Christmas with Bing Crosby and Danny K there’s a line that says something like “is it as hard to find as a democrat?“ Pertaining to Vermont.. Of course that was about 1947.
Republican Paul LePage from 2011-2019. He was a good old fashioned Yankee from Bangor.
I would never describe Paul LePage as a good old fashioned Yankee. He is from a French Canadian family and grew up on the hard streets of Lewiston Maine. Prior to being governor, he was the mayor of Waterville Maine.
There is no inherent advantage to one side or the other in ranked choice voting. It hurt conservatives in Alaska because dems flipped to the Rino, but conversely, with a large Dem advantage in Maine, Republicans can throw their second choice to a moderate, blocking the most liberal candidate.
We should get rid of it, but where it exists don’t preemptively throw in the towel on elections.
Vermont was a old fashioned Yankee farm/conservative state until all the hippies from NYC started moved there in the 1960s. Like Ben & Jerry.
Now, VT is full of vacation homes for people from NY & CT.
There are still lots of dairy farms. There are still more cows than people.
The issue is all the liberals in Burlington, which is a college town out vote the dairy farmers. Then you also have all the people who work at ski areas in the winter, and are semi unemployed the rest of the year.
Seeing a GOP Establishment operative win in a state like South Carolina or Texas is very heartbreaking. I hope they lose every time.
But being as this is Maine, this is wonderful. I hope he wins. Best of luck Bobby.
Working under Bush, you can bet he’s a RINO.
He worked in the paper industry before becoming a turn business around specialist taking him to Mardens where he worked until announcing his campaign.
I think one of the retired traders in my office used to sell him or knew him from Mardens.
