Ukraine's parliament extends martial law until August

Ukraine's parliament has extended martial law until August, lawmakers said, delaying the timing of new elections that the United States and Russia have been pushing for.

As the war with Russia rages on, an overwhelming majority of 357 deputies on Wednesday supported the extension. It allows the country to continue mobilizing troops and suspends the election cycle.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has faced pressure to hold elections from U.S. President Donald Trump, who called him a dictator - criticism that prompted Ukrainians to rally around Zelenskiy and boosted his approval ratings.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly questioned Zelenskiy's legitimacy after his term ended in 2024. But in line with the Ukrainian legislation, elections are impossible during martial law.

That Winston Z, champion of democracy.

Winston Churchill also suspended certain freedoms during WW2. Oswald Moseley and other members of the British Union of Fascists were imprisoned for the duration of the war, though they had not committed any crimes.

FDR imprisoned Japanese (and German and Italian) Americans for the duration of the war.

Woodrow Wilson and Abraham Lincoln also suspended various liberties.

And Bush 2 passed the Patriot Act in the 2000s (to the cheering of many conservatives).

It’s clear Zelensky is a dyed-in-the-wool democrat.

I’ve been mostly neutral in this mess but this is a hard one to defend for the Ukr side.

Even our own Roosevelt (dam near a socialist himself) held elections in the greatest war the world has ever seen. Nov 7, 1944.

--- "It's clear Zelensky is a dyed-in-the-wool democrat."

Most important to recall this. And some references, to support the thesis:

An observation, after a chat with my bride, who is a stickler for definitions.

Here's a WIKI -- "Martial law is the replacement of civilian government by military rule and the suspension of civilian legal processes for military powers."

This being the usual definition, the "Ukraine's parliament" as a supposedly civilian government action cannot have been "civilian" control of the military rule. That "an overwhelming majority of 357 deputies" expressed their view cannot be "law" while under military rule.

This is an act for the worldwide rubes. See? We're both under "martial law" and under "civilian rule." Yeah, right.

And what does that to do with extending the suspension of elections? We had elections during the Civil War, WWI, and WII.

If there is a ceasefire in Ukraine, elections should be held immediately.

Lol, of course there were elections here in untouched America, that “greatest war the world has ever seen” was on the other side of the world, not here in America and Canada, or Mexico, we didn’t have invading armies occupying America and bombing our cities and capitol and electricity centers, our daily lives and systems were normal.

Zelensky knows he can’t win an election and can’t survive past a peace agreement. Hes just trying to buy time for himself.

President Trump’s promise to end this war quickly was based on the expectation of Russia’s willingness to negotiate.

It does not presuppose that the losing nation that needs the help of the whole world to keep it alive is being led by a suicide cult hell bent on keeping the flames of war alive.

FDR imprisoned Japanese (and German and Italian) Americans for the duration of the war.

That was 'apparently' the wrong thing to do. But like always, 29/20 hindsight is never wrong. Precautions that turn out to be wrongfully imposed, are always open to Monday morning quarterbacking.

Did any one know at the time of the Japanese imprisonment that those people were patriotic Americans and would never turn against us? we now have many millions of "American' with dual citizenship who still hold their country of origin in higher regard than the U.S. If we ever had to go to war with any of those countries, should we trust them no questions asked?

Everything. Many democratic nations, including our own, suspend liberties during wartime.

We had elections during the Civil War, WWI, and WII.

But we suspended other liberties. Your argument boils down to, "I hit the guy with a hammer, but you used a crowbar. Two completely different things."

Roosevelt's war was far overseas and didn't affect the ability of these US to conduct elections (aside from a bunch of people overseas). Ukraine is partially occupied and huge chunks of the populace are under constant bombardment. Not the same thing.

Ukraine was one of the most corrupt countries in the world before the war with Russia. The Biden Crime Family enriched itself in Ukraine. Zelensky is not a Jeffersonian democratic. He is corrupt. Read the Pandora Papers. No one gets to be President of Ukraine without being corrupt. Ukraine is not a democratic nation. It is a corrupt oligarchy.

And how does the Ukranian Constitution define it? As the governing document here, that'll be much more legally applicable than Wikipedia...

Considering these US and Ukraine have different governing documents, that's not really applicable.

Did Zelensky even get a vote on this? Much less 357 of them?
