ONE quickish concession following the election of Joe Biden as US President has seen a four-month suspension of the 25 per cent tariffs imposed by Donald Trump on the import of Scotch Whisky.
Amongst other exports also now allowed into the US tariff free are cheese, pork, cashmere and machinery.
It comes in response to the suspension of UK tariffs on certain goods effective from January 1, 2021 when Britain ceased to be part of the European Union.
The argument and tit for tat measures came about as the US Government was accused of giving financial support to Boeing and Europe of giving support to Airbus.
The matter will still have to be resolved between the UK and US in the long term but in a joint statement, the UK and the US said that the suspension would “ease the burden on industry and take a bold, joint step towards resolving the longest running disputes at the World Trade Organization”.
Karen Betts, head of the Scotch Whisky Association, said the industry has lost around £500 million (€550 million) in export sales to the US in the 16 months that the tariffs were in place and welcomed the news.
The USA in particular is worried about the possible emergence of new companies producing aircraft from countries such as China which could cause serious competing to Boeing so therefore wants to resolve disputes with the UK to ensure solidarity.
In the meantime, the European Union will have to consider its position, possibly with a view to helping finding a settlement beneficial to both Airbus and Boeing.
I’ll drink to that.
Maybe it’s because Trump’s mother was a Scottish born MacLeod?
Woo hoo, being a cigar and scotch old man this is music to my ears :)
I can hear the sighs of relief from Jennifer Granholm, and Pat Leahy.
The bottle is mightier than the quiver.

FOUR-YEAR OLD ARTICLE from early in the Biden administration. FYI
There’ll be a hot time in the old town tonight.
From March of 2021... Why?
my bad. It was pushed to the front page there, and didn’t realize, but it is kind of interesting, given what’s going on now.
*whew*
Shot of Scotty (with shots):
Knowledge of the give and take of negotiations involving higherups.
Scotty to Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge in Star Trek: The Net Generation:
“Do you mind a little advice? Starfleet captains are like children. They want everything right now and they want it their way. But the secret is to give them only what they need, not what they want.”
La Forge innocently said he promised his report in an hour and simply gave it in an hour, rather than make it sound like that would be a real strain.
Scotty: Oh, laddie. You’ve got a lo
t to learn if you want people to think of you as a miracle worker.
For years in software development we created two estimates: The real estimate us IT people gave ourselves, and the “Scotty estimate” (as we called it) that we gave to project managers/functional users. LOL
Ha. So long as you gave it all you had.

New Saturday Night Live appearance for Kamala in preparation.
Director:
So we’ll need to have makeup do a major realistic look of you being a long-time alcoholic lush.
Oh, wait. You’re already way ahead of us.
If SNL had any reality, Willie Brown would pop-in with a cameo saying he prefers Kamala drunk.
Good idea.
Their whiskey has no standards and can be distilled in some guys bathtub
American Bourbon however is distilled with stringent standards
Just saying
