Did they stop growing them?

I think the ones I purchase here are a mix of Philippines’ and Hawaiian.
Nothing like the ones I grew or bought in Texas.
(Even harder to find any good ones in Japan.)

You are eating a watercado. A watery avocado that is not oily like the classic Hass from California. Now widely grown in Mexico, so keeping Hass avocado prices down. The Dominican Republic grown avocadoes are large and common in the USA. They are watery too.
