General Motors (GM) plans to expand production at one of its plants in Indiana thanks to President Donald Trump’s tariffs on foreign-made cars.

On Wednesday evening, Trump announced a 25 percent tariff on all foreign-made cars to protect the nation’s auto industry from unfair trade competition.

GM executives said they will be increasing production of light-duty trucks at the automaker’s Fort Wayne Assembly Plant in Indiana, according to an exclusive report by Reuters on Thursday.

I’m letting this all play out. My concern, do we really have the technical staff/abilities to do all this production here (in America)?

Well, let’s hope GM gets around to making better products. I don’t know anyone who’s bought a GM car in 25 years.....

Lots of people who can’t code can learn to build cars. Outsourcing has sucked the life out of Americans manufacturing areas and many skilled and semi-skilled people are underemployed, working in retail or service jobs because that’s all there was. Then they got crapped on during covid when even those were impacted. As decent-paying manufacturing jobs become available I think you’ll see Americans (not illegals) coming out of the woodwork to take them.

Fort Wayne Assembly Plant in Indiana

I can remember when that plant was a brand new, green field operation.

I’m hoping all auto makers can now concentrate on making more reliable and longer lasting vehicles once climate change and vehicle gimmickry dies.

GM hasn’t been alone in product deterioration.

Lots of people under 40 have no idea how much the US has lost in the last 40 years.

Down here in the South, almost every major small town had a factory making stuff, due to lower wages and not being union.
Americans making stuff in America.

Now most of those factories are gone, first moving to Mexico and then to China. These kinds of jobs are what used to make America great and let its people live the American Dream. Now we import so much stuff and pay other countries and make them rich.

The modern engine designs in their Silverado’s are blowing up with very low mileage. Then even the replacement engines are failing. The cost to replace them without warranty is staggering because they cost so much more than the reliable old engines.

Here is a video about it. Read the comments.

To be fair- GM is not the only one with these issues. The modern engine designs are junk.

I would hope so. Seeing some of the current crop of young Americans gives me doubts.

My ‘83 Chevy short bed, 308 is still running strong.
Won’t buy a UAW or foreign truck, will be buried in my Chebby (loud grunting).

Das glimmersparken und der dizzleflippen nein es farfunuggen!

I believe the longest noun in the world is either German or Welch—the only language scarier than German.
In a Lovecraftian sense.

We have friends who buy the top level Cadillac SUVs. They are beautiful cars. I don’t know about reliability.

Thanks, LOL. I had totally forgotten about:

"fahrvergnügen

[Share definition]

German Fahrvergnügen, from fahren (to drive) + Vergnügen (pleasure); popularized by Volkswagen advertisements in the 1990s."

Light duty trucks? Oh, one of those Mom jeans 4-door anemic "trucks" with more sheet metal than cubic inches.

Hey! I have a great idea! Let's replace a passenger sedan trunk with a "truck bed"! Wow! Intant pickup!

The 1500 Silverado and Sierra are considered ‘light-duty’ trucks and assembled in Ft. Wayne.
