Layoffs across the U.S. surged 205% in March when compared with a year earlier, with last month's 275,240 job cuts fueled by widespread firings engineered by billionaire Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, according to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas...

Last month's cuts were led by losses in federal jobs, largely directed by DOGE, with more than 216,000 government employees fired from their jobs in March, Challenger said.

This is the first number I have seen for March government layoffs.

April could exceed that number.

Thank you President Trump.

The scary part, those Fed layoffs are only 7% of the work force.

216,000+ of those jobs were government jobs.

“US employers announced 275.240K job cuts in March 2025, the highest value since May 2020, compared to 172.017K in February. The Government led all sectors in job cuts in March with 216,215, all of which occurred in the federal government.”

Btw—I have seen some incorrect numbers on how many new federal employees the Biden administration hired. Here are the real numbers:

https://www.govexec.com/workforce/2025/01/see-where-and-how-biden-grew-federal-workforce/401945/

Bottom line—In two months President Trump has already fired as many federal employees as Biden hired in four years.

Biden’s job growth was mainly government jobs. This just sets things back to normal.

There is a logical explanation for the difference.

Most of the fired federal workers remain on the payroll due to severance agreements of various kinds.

They will start hitting the unemployment application numbers in late summer or fall.
