Rep. Meuser to Newsmax: Trump Is Bringing a Correction in Trade
Newsmax ^ | April 3, 2025 | James Morley III

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced his much-anticipated reciprocal tariffs on more than 180 countries designed to reset global trade and return manufacturing to the United States. While many financial experts have reacted with skepticism, Rep. Dan Meuser told Newsmax on Thursday that the tariffs were necessary as the world markets "needed a reckoning. We needed a correction, and President Trump is bringing it."

He spoke about unfair trade.

"Look, we've been treated unfairly. Free trade has become synonymous with unfair trade. And President Trump is creating a fair playing field, a more level playing field when it comes to trade levels, the so-called tariff levels. The United States is already a very expensive place to do business, right? Our healthcare costs are higher, our taxes, our regulations, we're a litigious society, so all these things factor in and then we give advantages to overseas manufacturers to sell into our country," Meuser said during an appearance on Newsmax's "National Report."

The representative from Pennsylvania's 9th Congressional District clarified that Trump's economic plan will feed off itself but it all starts with the tariffs to bring manufacturing home.

"The more 'made in the USA', the more supply we create, that will match demand, which will bring down inflation, which will allow interest rates to come down, which will allow more housing to take place, more car purchases, more CapEx investment.

Free trade has become synonymous with unfair trade.

In the long run this is a great move and was way past time. Thank YOU President Trump. In the short run it might get a little bumpy... :)

I think it’s beyond just trade. The Covid lockdown caused a lot of small businesses to close as their walk-in traffic stopped. So many businesses have abandoned their former buildings. Trump absolutely understands the commercial real estate market is on the edge. If we reinvigorate manufacturing, the mom and pop businesses will return, local support businesses will open, and folks will flee the indoctrination centers for real jobs. Returning a manufacturing base will help to solve a lot of problems.

People should know that almost every country has tariffs on our products that are at least twice as high as ours on their products (https://ustr.gov/sites/default/files/files/Press/Reports/2025NTE.pdf) In some case, much worse: Canada has up to a 268% tariff on US dairy products. Trump's tariff are "reciprocal tariffs". Example, the EU has a 12.5% tariff on US auto while we have a 2.5% tariff on EU cars imported into the US. Trump simply made them equal: 12.5% on their cars. There is discussion about lowering the tariff by the EU, but nothing has changed yet. However, some countries (Vietnam, India, Israel) have lowered tariffs on US products.

Trump is simply responding in kind to the treatment they've been giving us for decades.

I agree with your assessment. Mom and Pop businesses can restart rather quickly, but it will take years to build up a strong manufacturing base.

“but it will take years to build up a strong manufacturing base.”

As a small manufacturer this is true. There better be some serious incentives to buy US made machinery because there aren’t very many machine manufacturers in the the USA. I make parts on CNC machines that are pushing 25 years old. Korea, Germany, Taiwan, Japan, make excellent machining tools. There are not many left in the USA and those that exist are not going to be able to ramp up production of new capacity. And supply lines are intertwined worldwide. It will be painful for quite a few years if the democrats and their judges even ALLOW manufacturing capacity to increase. They sure as hell aren’t going to allow new mines, steel mills, foundries, smelters, etc.

Indeed at a time when it’s needed most.

Democrat chaos takes a very high toll.

Lots of money changed hands to keep the system as unfair as it was. Trump felt the people making the trades were either incredibly stupid or corrupt. I’m going with ‘corrupt’

So thankful Trump is making the changes he’s making.
