Single parents hit hardest by 'awful April' bill rises
BBC NEWS ^ | April 1 | BBC

A series of essential household bills are rising at the start of April, with warnings that single parents are among the hardest hit.

Water bills, energy prices and council tax are all going up in what has been dubbed "awful April", although the minimum wage is also increasing.

The charity Citizens Advice said the finances of millions of people on the lowest incomes were "already stretched to breaking point".

Many single parents in particular would struggle because a greater proportion of their money was taken up by essential spending, it said.

Laura Roan, a single mother of two daughters from Cardiff, said: "Without my own mum helping, there would be some days when I would not have any electric."

It takes a special kind of government to screw over single moms but here it is. It's tough out there on one income and that is by design.

The system is rotten!

It never used to be this way.

One income would provide for a family even Vacations and such in the 1960s and before typically by the father who earned the crust.

What has changed?

The monetary system and the banks are to blame. Bills and inflation

The article is talking about UNWED MOTHERS IN THE UK!

You posted a comment about a MARRIED COUPLE, perhaps with a child.

So WHAT is your point?

The point is the money system we have is making us poorer. Inflation is the culprit

So don't become a single parent! Problem solved!

Sheesh!

"So don't become a single parent! Problem solved!"

That sounds like a quote from a braying jackass. What about widows with children? Don't go out of your way to be an a-hole.

Approximately 5% of single mothers in the US are widowed.

Always coming with the rare exceptions to the rule, the outlying cases!

By and large, it is a problem of a handful of libertine men (gangbangers, etc.) impregnating a vast swathe of loose women.

Eliminate that part of the problem, and the ills of society would already be nine-tenths solved. Tons of revenues would then be freed up to address the real instances of undeserved hardship.

Two-thirds of your response was devoted to pure ad hominem, as though my status as an "asshole" had any bearing on the truth-content of my utterances. Why not try refuting the actual argument, rather than needlessly impugning your opponent's character? You convince no one, you achieve nothing, you resolve nothing by resorting to cheap name-calling.

Approximately 5% of single mothers in the US are widowed.

And subtract the number of those who died in a hail of bullets (drive-by shooting, failed convenience store hold-up, police stand-off) or due to a drug overdose in a public toilet ("I can't breathe!"), and you end up with a much smaller and more-manageable number of actual instances of blameless hardship to which our charity dollars could instead be devoted!

The savings in reduced incarceration rates (fatherless boys are far more likely to end up in prison - besides a host of other negative outcomes).

What has changed?

You must be young. Feminism is what ruined everything. When womyn started working wages stagnated, then off shoring hit and wages really went south. Learn history....

Feminism, off shoring and globalism are making workers poorer. The investment class is doing better than ever. Nice try Lie-bertarian.

Sorry, didn't complete that thought:

The savings in reduced incarceration rates (fatherless boys are far more likely to end up in prison - besides a host of other negative outcomes), alone, could pay for uplifting thousands of poor boys and girls whose fathers met an untimely death due, e.g., to cancer.

Single parents usually get the worse of it in life.
Better to get married then have children within the marriage.
But hey Starmer’s far left agenda doesn't encourage marriage.
Meanwhile, Starmer’s making plenty of noise about sending British troops to Ukraine.
If he doesn't have money for single mothers, where's he getting the money to send troops to Ukraine from?

“Special kind of govt to screw over single moms”?

I am guessing that many of these “single moms” made plenty of bad decisions that “self screwed” them, but like you will never see an ABC interview of fired CNN employee(apparently only fired govt workers are worthy of that “honor””, I have never been interviewed over my skyrocketing property taxes…..

Sorry, but not sorry

It could be anyone who is single and has a single income

My general point perhaps not well made is it’s difficult on one income compared to the 60s and before when it was PLENTY even to support a family (typically the male) including vacations and other things.
