North Liberty, Iowa — At the weekly senior lunch social in North Liberty, Iowa, chicken was on the menu, but Social Security was top of mind.
Iowa, like the U.S., is aging. One in four people in the state is age 60 and older, according to the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services. Uncertainty in Washington means anxiety here.
Anne Bacon tells CBS News the issue gives her "daymares."
Bacon relies on the $1,600 a month she receives from Social Security to pay for the 24-hour care of her brother, Rick Clark, who has dementia.
"Every day I'm worried that somehow he'll lose his care," Bacon said.
When a Social Security check didn't arrive in January, Bacon called the agency and ended up on hold for more than six hours on two separate calls. When she finally got someone on the phone, the problem was resolved in minutes.
The average wait time for Social Security calls has doubled in the last six months to 104 minutes.
John Hale worked for Social Security for 25 years. He and his wife Terri are now advocates for older and disabled Iowans through the Hale Group.
"It's about retirement benefits," Hale said. "It's about survivors' benefits, and about payments to people with disabilities."
President Trump has insisted that he is not touching Social Security, which has more than 70 million recipients. But he is touching jobs within the agency. Last month, the agency announced plans to cut about 7,000 employees, or about 12% of its workforce.
The agency has also been hit by a bevy of changes. The Social Security Administration announced earlier this month that it would require in-person identity checks for new and existing beneficiaries, with some limited exemptions.

Beneficiary and Guardian at fault?
Or, a labor shortage error at Social Security?
Somptin’ not right here - SSA does not send “checks” any more.
Should that say “deposit”?
North Liberty, Iowa. Part of the Coralville-Iowa City (U of Iowa) metro. Probably at least 75% dems.
Fake news reporting has many seniors alarmed.
Media stoking fear because they are against Trump.
I am 65 and I have heard for most of my life that Repubs are going to gut or cut social security. Hasn’t happened yet.
Yet dims raise our prices due to inflation with out raising SS benefits, which is an actual cut in SS.
Game of words.
Really? Isn’t Trump the one trying to make our benefits tax free? Trying to keep the fraudsters from stealing benefits?
🔝🔝
I agree. He needs to go on TV and tell people what is the purpose of the audits and why. What needs to be done and what will not be done. Right now, the media is spreading false information and basically not helping things.
Perfect election timing. Just a few thousand vote swing is all that is needed in WI and FL.
She has "daymares" for an incident that occurred before Trump was president (or president for fewer than two weeks), and this is somehow Trump's fault?
Plus, the issue was resolved "in minutes" but the article doesn't say what the issue was.
This article is clearly meant to make it seem like the Trump administration is at fault. I'm thinking this is just a way to stoke fear and uncertainty in a usually solid Republican voting block.
It appears he is relying on his pressers he gives in the oval office to report these facts. They have not and will not. What they do is pick and choose what they’ll report.
I have not seen anything related to illegals scamming SS benefits. All i have seen is that illegals have SSN’s which if they are working they should have an SSN. And if that is the case they are paying. Does anyone actually think an illegal alien has the chops to scam the SSA?
Just smile and say, “That’s nice…”
CBS
COMPLETE BS
Should they be here at all? Should the Biden gang have signed them up for SS or SSI?
So worried about their checks. How about worry about inflation, cost of living, high rents — and about their grandkids who are on track not to have a social security to rely on in their old age!!
“Bacon relies on the $1,600 a month she receives from Social Security to pay for the 24-hour care of her brother, Rick Clark, who has dementia.”
It costs over 20k a month for 24 hour a day care for my mother with dementia. That’s quite a bargain they’re getting there. I’m sure it’s top shelf care seeing how they must be living on the rest...
And more media reports on what the media is reporting about
this will available as soon as the media makes them up.
