‘Negativity won’t win a trade war,’ Carney says in shot at Poilievre

CBC News Special | Carney kicks off Liberal campaign, Canadians set to vote April 28 .....

The Latest Voters will go to the polls on April 28. Carney says he will cut taxes for middle-class Canadians. Speaking earlier in Quebec, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said he will stand up to U.S. President Donald Trump and his threats of annexation. We’re expecting to hear from all the other major national party leaders today as well. Polling suggests a tight race between the Liberals and Tories as the campaign gets underway. Updates March 23 6 minutes ago Carney leaning on his short record Darren Major Carney has only been in office for a little over a week, but he began his opening remarks by touting what he has accomplished.

The Liberal leader pointed to his meetings with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, his commitment to remove interprovincial trade barriers by Canada Day and his moves to scrap the consumer carbon tax and the proposed capital gains tax changes.

“There is so much more to do to secure Canada, to invest in Canada, to build Canada, to unite Canada. That’s why I’m asking for a strong positive mandate from my fellow Canadians,” Carney said.

...

Jenna Benchetrit And we’re off! Carney says he asked the Governor General to dissolve Parliament, calling an election for April 28.

That means today is Day 1 of an election campaign that will run for 36 days — the shortest allowed under Canadian law, per Elections Canada.

The 36-day campaign ends on Sunday, April 27, and election day is Monday, April 28. With a few exceptions, the election must always fall on a Monday.

My recommendation if you care is to watch the broadcast (which is presently live in Q&A)--Carney starts speaking at about the 15 minute mark

Ping Canada Ping

Freepmail me if you want on or off the Canuck ping list, which I am committed to running through at least May 1st (Election is on the 28th).

Carney is running hard to the right of Trudeau (leaving the far left to the NDP) and hard to the left of Trump, which gives him a huge amount of runway, and attempting to box the CPC to a narrow corridor to his right (or alternately to the right of Trump).

THe hard push on tax cuts, inter-provincial free trade with a dollop of dental care looks to me like something that will be lapped up and put the CPC on defense.

It’s Global, but doesn’t really matter who. He is doing a good job of presenting to the press an illusion that his cabinet is and will be different from Trudeau.

CBC -Liberal election committee. They have added 20 points to the Carney’s numbers.

Trump added 20 points to Carney’s numbers with his autistic rhetoric about Canada.

It would be one thing if they added them by faking numbers-—but a substantial portion is added through free softball press.

It’s unfair, but unless one can pitch around the problem, one will lose.

Carney did a good job of placing Smith (AB premier), Poilievre, and Trump together in one box. The percentage of Albertans who want to be Americans is only 20%-—the percentage who want out of Canada is significantly higher, but likely not a majority.

We will see how the campaign runs.

Nice question pointing out that he went from Mass to the Governor General and how this fits with abortion-—he intends to serve and not impose values. He may go to Hell, but Sussex Drive is a nice pit stop.

Trump was just the bullet. The gun was Carney and the CBC. It will probably work and Canada will suffer..a lot.

If stupid Canadians feel offended and vote for the party that put them through hell the past 9 yrs then it’s on them not Trump.

The CBC would have added 2-6 without Trump, but Trump gave them some slow pitches right in the zone and under the circumstances it doesn’t take a genius to load the bases, hit a grand slam, and claim that one has found the next Barry Bonds.

Is this coming from someone who voted for McCain, Romney, and the Bushes collectively more than once?

What rationale is there for Canada to exist?

Re: "Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said he will stand up to U.S. President Donald Trump and his threats of annexation."

First thing I notice...

A French Canadian Conservative?

Doomed - before the first vote has been cast.

15 minutes into the campaign, and Pierre - the Conservative - has already linked arms with the Political Left by pretending that Donald Trump's sarcastic humor is dangerous and insulting.

Canada has a better grasp of Federalism than the U.S.

The Puritans in the U.S. N.E. only were capable of grasping minority rights so long as they were a minority. Once they were a majority, a Calvinistic imperialism that tended more and more towards secularism seems predestined.

Until it doesn’t. For Yanks that still hold onto Manifest Destiny be careful what you wish for——if the U.S. manages to swallow Canada, Canada’s blue values (to use U.S. colours-—in Canada conservatives remain blue) will swallow what is left of the U.S. red dominion (again, U.S. red).

Or in other words, the Canadian red will swamp the U.S. red.

I think it’s pretty clear Trump doesn’t believe Poilievre is who he purports to be. Carney with his obvious WEF and CPC ties might be easier for the USA to counter and subdue than someone who maintains those ties quietly but superficially purports to be a conservative.

Unless you are from NYC or some other strange place, his sarcastic humour is insulting. Even a significant chunk of his friends can see that.

Too bad his most ardent supporters can’t.

To deny that, at least outside of the U.S., is political suicide.

I think that Trump is developing a Canada strategy on the fly, and initially thought that a joint Canadian/Mexican strategy could work.

It was by no means clear that Carney was going to end up replacing Trudeau when Trump started inadvertently aiding the Liberals.

That Poilievre can’t make positive use of the free press that Trump is generating for the Liberals is likely not something that keeps Trump awake at night.

He is an Ontarian. The only provinces with French Canadian politicians are Quebec and New Brunswick.

He does represent an Ottawa riding, but calling someone in that position (with the arguable exception of Lemieux’s old riding east of Ottawa) a French Canadian Conservative is like calling someone representing Alexandria VA a southern politician.

PP has a French name but he grew up in anglophone Canada speaking English, so he is not widely regarded as being French Canadian in Canada. There is plenty of time in five weeks of campaigning to establish real differences between parties but some will continue to be fooled by Carney and his supposedly center-right shift. He remains hard left and will be looking for ways to replace the consumer carbon tax with an industry-based tax that will be even worse for the economy than was the disliked consumer carbon tax. Gas prices are going to be coming down as a result, short-term, but would float back higher later in the year, so it is all a smoke and mirrors show.

Perhaps the real Canadian alternative (PPC) will get some traction as Max Bernier will have a lot of context for saying he is the real deal and was calling it straight all along. The thing that will hold him back is fear among conservative voters that a vote for Max will be a back-door vote for the Liberals in close ridings. In conservative easy picking territory (most of western Canada) people may feel freed up to register a vote with PPC which managed about 3% last time (compared with losing Cons share, 33%).

The NDP appear to be down in latest polls, a key to a Conservative win is a relatively good showing by NDP draining Liberal votes off to the left.
