Because my husband’s job relocated him from NY to CA, I had to quit my job and was getting unemployment checks for (I think) three months.

In CA, I found a job quickly and called the Unemployment Office in NY to tell them to stop sending checks because I was working. Dead silence. Then the woman said that “Nobody ever does that.” She said they didn’t know how to make the checks stop. The checks kept coming.

I sent a registered letter, but never heard back. That was in 2002.

Back in the 70s I was in the Air Force and decided to take a course and pay for it with money from the VA (about $130 I think. A LOT of money in those days, especially to me). I later decided not to take the course and wanted to return the money, but didn't know how. I wrote, and called and finally talked to a guy who thought I was insane and said something like "We have no way to take money back. Go out for a night on the town with it.".
