Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, occupied by Russian forces since the early days of the war, could be restored and protected by US ownership – at least according to the Americans.
But it’s unclear how the operation would work in practice, experts say, especially as the plant is on the front line, in territory controlled by Russia.
As part of ongoing talks to inch toward a partial ceasefire, US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky “discussed Ukraine’s electrical supply and nuclear power plants” during a Wednesday phone call, according to the US readout of the call.
On Thursday, Zelensky disputed that section, saying: “In terms of ownership, we definitely did not discuss this with President Trump.” Zelensky stressed that “all nuclear power belongs to the (Ukrainian) state, including the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia region.”

Nothing but a group of radioactive junk
I remember when New England States had eight operating power plants. Now the region has two remaining.
That’s about 5 GW of very cheap, safe base load electricity gone from the New England grid, thanks to Democrat governors, environmentalists and various American leftist organizations
Ukraine, Russia, wherever - I wouldn’t let US politicians anywhere near my energy grid.
Taking over an old Soviet-era nuclear power plant is like inheriting a Superfund site, with all the legal and financial encumbrances that implies.
The costs are going to be astronomical because much of the Ukraine's power system and grid was already obsolete and worn out left over Soviet era equipment that was being kept in service long after it's expiration date.
Te investment is going to be huge and in no way can the corrupt Ukrainian system be trusted develop and manage the new infrastructure.
Only if the transmission lines reach Hawaii.
a) it gives the US as the "owner" leverage over Russia to get the power plant and lower Zaporazhia back from Russia;
b) it gives the US some control over the spent fuel.
You can be sure one thing Ukraine will do as soon as this war is over is spin up centrifuges, probably with South Korea and Poland.
Did you know that there is a full square kilometer of unusable radioactive vehicles that were used to stop the runaway reactor at Chernobyl?
This is CNN...
Zelensky knows he is dead if the fighting stops.
Section 8 powerplants.
We build em we own em. Sell the output to Ukraine and the excess to the north. 80% of Germany’s electric rate. We’d make a fortune.
Zaporizhzhia Is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, and it’s RUSSIAN. The Russians don’t make bad nuclear power plants. But, They made inferior fuel rods to save money, which caused the explosion at Chernobyl when a dumbass bureaucrat forced an inexperienced shift to run a moronic test that ran out of control. The HBO series “Chernobyl” is a definite worth the watch. They don’t take cost cutting measures on their fuel rods anymore.
As for Chernobyl and Zaporizhzhia power plants, they would be fine if we quit giving Ukraine the missile to hit them with. Right? Because that ‘s what they’ve been doing in case you’ve forgotten. Since the war began!
Definitely NOT “nation building!”
Radioactive junk, which means potential material for dirty bombs or full on nuclear weapons.
Good. The end is coming if this is being discussed.
Now, talk about the hardened underground munitions factories.
Ukraine doesn’t need nuclear reactors to farm wheat. I don’t think they have the men for anything else.
Put the nuke plants into huge embassies. Under international law, an embassy is the sovereign territory of the country sending the envoys/ambassadors.
It came from CNN, therefore, worth the wait for real journalists and associated “experts” to report on it.
Three words never used in the same sentence: Russian Quality Assurance
You don’t have to be an expert to know this is a really bad idea.
