An upcoming 60 Minutes investigation into the drone sightings that took place toward the end of 2024 promises to reveal more about the government's knowledge and response to the still largely-unexplained phenomena.

In a preview for the special, CBS News correspondent Bill Whitaker speaks with Mississippi Senator Roger Wicker, Chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, inquiring about the intelligence community's thoughts on the mysterious sightings and whether these could have been an attempt at espionage by a foreign power.

"I am privy to classified briefings at the highest level," Wicker said. "I think the Pentagon and the National Security Advisors are still mystified."

...

In late January, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt released a statement from President Trump on the New Jersey sightings, which read: "After research and study, the drones that were flying over New Jersey in large numbers were authorized to be flown by the FAA for research and various other reasons.

The CBS 60 Minutes investigation on the mysterious drone sightings will air Sunday at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time. [Tonight]

"I am privy to classified briefings at the highest level," Wicker said.

And then again, maybe he's not.

"I think the Pentagon and the National Security Advisors are still mystified."

They are lying or else totally incompetent.

Something sure doesn't add up.

The WH says they are FAA-approved research drones, but now the Chairman of the Armed Services Committee says the Pentagon and National Security Advisors "are still mystified."

And Texas Rep. Michael McCaul says "those that are over our military sites are adversarial and most likely are coming from the People's Republic of China."

What the heck?

Every single New Jersey drone picture or video posted over the past six months turned out to be an airplane.

I have yet to see a single picture* of any loitering drone “the size of a Volkswagen”. There are drones this big, but not a single picture of an unidentified one.

* There are plenty of pictures of big drones you can google, but none of these were pictures of the mysterious ones over New Jersey, our bases or other places.

The last thing I heard about the drones was the NJ Governor saying the drones were from the US and they were performing ‘experiments’. The word may have been ‘research’. But mostly silence since then.

I would like to know why the feds are mystified, that should only happen if the drones were foreign.

...find out the hidden funding stream on this one...

I suspect that some of those peculiar USAID funds are cut that dark projects will go dark. Or people start dying.

Yep.

Here's my take: The White House’s "FAA-approved research drones" explanation seems intentionally flimsy, suggesting a bigger story. If this were minor, they would have shut it down with a clear, timely answer.

The real issue likely falls into one of three scenarios:

  1. They truly don’t know – The Pentagon’s confusion signals a major security failure, with unidentified and unidentifiable drones operating unchecked over U.S. airspace—an outright military embarrassment. If so, the White House is likely scrambling to fix security weaknesses before making a public statement.

  2. Foreign/Rogue involvement – If these drones are Chinese espionage tools or tied to a rogue actor, the administration may be delaying disclosure while working to neutralize the threat diplomatically or militarily.

  3. UAP connection – If this is the case, the White House, Pentagon, and Intelligence Community are likely carefully coordinating how to fit this into the broader disclosure narrative.

Whatever the truth, it’s not small—otherwise, the White House would have dismissed it quickly. Instead, we’re getting delayed and cryptic statements, like this from the Chairman of the Armed Services Committee:

"I am privy to classified briefings at the highest level, and I think the Pentagon and the National Security Advisors are still mystified."
