The Internal Revenue Service’s top lawyer has reportedly been demoted as Elon Musk’s DOGE agency continues its push to get access to confidential taxpayer data.

William Paul, the IRS’ acting chief counsel, was recently removed from his position, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday, citing multiple sources.

Paul is expected to be replaced by another IRS lawyer, Andrew De Mello, who was nominated to be the Education Department’s inspector general during President Trump’s first administration, according to the sources.

The exact circumstances surrounding Paul’s demotion weren’t immediately clear.

Paul, who is a non-political appointee, has been running what is essentially the tax agency’s law firm since his predecessor resigned at the end of former President Joe Biden’s term.

It is not so much your "confidential data" that DOGE wants access to in the system. They want to find the corruption in the system and the deep state doesn't want DOGE to find it.

I don’t recall every single personnel move being a newsworthy matter before Trump.

There needs to be a saying stronger than, “asserted without evidence.”

I don’t recall every single personnel move being a newsworthy matter before Trump.

I also don't recall every single personnel move being blocked by a PopUp Judge.

Top IRS lawyer demoted

Is he in a bus at the bottom of a deep ocean. If not, this isn't even a good start.

I wish reporters knew something about what they are reporting on.

They have no desire for access to individual taxpayer records. They undoubtedly do want access to the systems using those records to assess their cost, efficiency, and how the employee workload is distributed.

This would also allow them to see, if they wish to, who has authority to access what records and who has done so.

I suspect they'll find more than a little corruption with employees paid to alter tax records and even more so, employees spying for Democrats and leaking confidential information.

I know that and you know that, but the media doesn’t want the “people” to know that. It gets more clicks if they present the narrative that Musk is just going in and deleting and stealing info and firing people who get in his way.

A non-political appointee. There are no non-political appointees.
