Ukraine on verge of losing Kursk pocket, its foothold inside Russia

(Reuters) - Ukrainian troops appeared on the point of losing their hard-won foothold inside Russia's Kursk region on Wednesday as Moscow claimed further advances there and military bloggers on both sides said Kyiv's forces were withdrawing.

Ukraine sprang one of the biggest shocks of the war on August 6 last year by storming across the border and grabbing a chunk of land inside Russia, boosting citizens' morale and gaining a potential bargaining chip.

But after clinging for more than seven months to a gradually shrinking area, Ukraine has seen its position worsen sharply in the past week.

Russia's defence ministry on Wednesday reported the capture of five more villages, and Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that "the dynamics are good".

Reuters was able to verify video published by Russian bloggers and state media showing troops standing with a Russian tricolour flag on a square in the centre of Sudzha, a town near the Ukrainian border on a highway used by Ukraine as a supply route.

Hidden in the fluff and BS is the fact Ukraine is withdrawing from Kursk under fire.

“Maybe this story will end today. Maybe they (the Ukrainians) will try to hold the border villages for another couple of days. But overall, the story of the Kursk bridgehead is coming to an end, and Ukrainian troops are leaving,” he told Dozhd TV.

Makes the peace process a bit simpler - at least for Russia.

They and the press will want to blame Trump for this but the fact is that Ukraine’s position has been weakening for weeks, as Russia has increasingly interrupted their logistics train.

Putin should let them retreat without harm if they leave their vehicles and weapons behind. ‘March or die’

Russian military have regained control over the settlements of Kazachya Loknya, 1st Knyazhiy, 2nd Knyazhiy, Zamostye and Mirny in the Kursk region,- the Russian Defense Ministry reports.

This is also showing on the war map... It’s time for peace.

Seems like Zelensky should have jumped at the chance for a cease-fire and negotiations as soon as Trump offered, while he still held Russian territory. Instead he came to the White House and gave Trump attitude.

Kursk is surrounded by Ruzzian solders.
For Ukies, it’s either surrender or die.

Moving forces into Kursk was a foolish move. Better it never happened but now the emphasis should be on preserving as many lives as possible and I suspect that Russia is not going to go for the total encirclement or the complete annihilation of the Ukrainian forces, better to let them slink away, beaten and demoralized.

Ukraine is holding Russian territory? I thought this was all just Russia invading poor Ukraine. I seriously had no idea that Ukraine had invaded right back.

This conflict was continously run by amateurs on the Ukie side. Either that or they have the most stupid commanding officers in history.

At least the Russians had the sense to get rid of those who failed to perform.

No army lets the enemy escape without harm — only to have to fight against them another day. We certainly don’t. Remember the Gulf War?

A bunch of Ukrainian soldiers surrendered and gave up their weapons and vehicles. There are videos of the Russians hauling off their Abrams tanks, etc.

Pity the foreign mercenaries who have no rights under the Geneva Conventions.

Wait, didn't John Bolton just say a cease-fire isn't in Ukraine's interests????

Maybe what he actually said was "A cease-fire isn't in my investment interests."

As an aside, physically, he looks less like a walrus now, and more like a "Get off of my lawn" and "Yell at the clouds" geezer.

That is what happens when you try to invade Russia. It never works out in the long run because Russia has always been willing to trade space for the time to slaughter you.

Impossible.
I was assured that Ukraine was winning and advancing on all fronts.

The Russians won't be stopping at the border either.

Expect to see headlines like Russian Incursion into Sumy in coming days

It’s bizarre that this was ever posed as a ‘bargaining chip’. What a waste of lives.

Eeew.

I was at a party once at my brother's house, and they served salad. It was very good, and they had put the bowl in the sink even though it still had some salad in it.

I went back for seconds, and as I ate it, I tasted tuna...I am not a huge fan of tuna in salads, and I stared at it...I looked down and saw the cat eating from a freshly filled dish of cat food!

ARRRRGGGH!

They had apparently scooped the cat food from the can, and thrown the fork into the salad bowl in the sink!!!!!
