Ukraine Cuts off Energy to Hungary & Slovakia
Armstrong Economics ^ | 12 Mar 25 | Martin Armstrong

Ukraine has attacked the Russian pipeline that cuts off the energy to Hungary and Slovakia. Budapest declared it was an attack on its sovereignty in the official statement of the Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó. Zelensky is out of control. Hungary has informed Ukraine that Hungary considers this an act of war that is an “attack on its sovereignty.” They also informed Ukraine:

“We urge the Ukrainians not to attack energy infrastructure that supplies Hungary.”

The former president of France stood alongside the Chancellor of Germany and declared that the purpose of the EU was to create one government, and that, they thought, would eliminate war. Of the nearly 11,000 historical battles fought in recorded history, about 85% have been found in Europe.

The cultural differences, language, and religions have all played a role in the constant turmoil in Europe. The EU wants war with Russia, and it refuses to accept the rejection of its dictatorial cultural decrees by Hungary over accepting Islamic migrants.

It was 1683 when the Ottoman Empire sought to conquer Europe and lost at the Battle of Vienna. For Brussels to dictate that they must accept these Islamic migrants is stirring up old hatreds from centuries-long since forgotten.

Ukraine continues to make new enemies that it doesn’t need to be making.

Hungary has informed Ukraine that Hungary considers this an act of war

I think that's at least somewhat true.

...that is an “attack on its sovereignty.”

Well, sounds to me like Hungary is too dependent on other countries to consider itself to being truly "sovereign". If you have that much dependency on other countries, your country is like the petulant teenager yelling she's all grown up and ready to move out on her own, but never doing so.

Arguments like this, along with the recent tiffs from Ontario about cutting off power to northern Dim states, should be a wake up call to be happy that Trump is making the U.S. energy independent again and we should do everything to make that a permanent position.

Uh, how did Ukraine "attack" the pipeline that supplies Hungary and Slovakia? Sounds like Ukraine just turned the valves off for a pipeline that crosses its sovereign territory. Hungary and Slovakia were stupid to ignore the consequences of Russia's war of aggression, but that is not a casus belli.

One of Hungary’s problems is lack of its own energy resources—it’s energy poor in this regard.

There’s some low-grade lignite coal and a few places for low head hydroelectric but that’s about it.

Almost all of its energy is imported so they make a big deal out of having energy-efficient homes.

For instance it was about 95 degrees outside and I went into a house that had no air conditioning and it was comfortable. That’s because building code requires a 2 meter thick foundation and brick walls that are insulated, essentially making a cave.

The brick is not a veneer over oriented strand board like here, it’s part of the load bearing wall.

Before the Ukraine conflict Hungary was set to purchase a nuclear reactor from Russia but I think that deal is on hold for obvious reasons.

The same way the West blew up the Nordstream pipeline. Shot themselves in the foot with that one. This deranged move will further push to the corrupted EU’s breaking up….fools.

It’s certainly not the way to make friends. I hope that backfires big time.

The best outcome might be one where Ukraine ceases to exist.

Not all countries can or have all resources “in country”. Even we trade with other countries for stuff we need.

Ukraine is doing this to Hungary because they do not support the war and never have. Hungary still trades with Russia because of its needs and is unwilling to hurt itself for other countries war aims.

While your point may be valid, Hungary may not have, and I do not know, the geographical resources to provide natural gas at the necessary scale and/or for a bearable cost.

Exactly, with Ukraine cutting off energy to Hungary and Slovakia, it is easy to see EU members states like Hungary pull out of the EU, they are fracturing.

Better yet, carve up Ukraine and give it back to it’s historic owners, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Russia, etc….leave Ukraine a tiny rump state incapable of causing trouble.

Historically, part of Russia once belonged to Ukraine.
