US education department plans to cut half its workforce

The US Department of Education is planning to cut about half of its workforce, as the Trump administration works to slash the size of the federal government.

The mass layoffs will affect nearly 2,100 people who are set to be placed on leave from 21 March.

Trump has long sought to eliminate the department, a long-cherished goal of some conservatives, but such an action would require approval by Congress.

The department, which has an annual budget of around $238bn (£188bn), employs more than 4,000 people.

Established in 1979, the department oversees funding for public schools, administers student loans and runs programmes that help low-income students.

But Trump has accused the agency of "indoctrinating young people with inappropriate racial, sexual, and political material".

The education level in red states is about to soar without the federal BOE hanging over them. But we need Congress to permanently end the BOE.

Just heard the ditzy broad running that joint that the Department of Education is needed for vulnerable children. Personally, I don’t think we should make the children vulnerable. That’s sick.

Of course. In the early 60s,
“federal aid to education” was a democrat proposal and a novel idea. One year (1962 iirc) it was a topic for high school debate teams. The primary argument against it was that federal dollars come with strings attached, and local schools would have to surrender control to remote bureaucrats in Washington. I don’t recall the pro argument, but history tells the tale on which side was right.

Half?
I was hoping they would turn the lights out. Permanently.

One thing I admit that I am enjoying is that the scare quotes are encompassing more words, sometimes almost an entire sentence!

Up until this election, only single words would appear in scare quotes, giving the “author” (like that) more freedom to say whatever they wanted to say. They would pretend to quote Trump or some anonymous source, but you would have no idea what, if anything, was actually said.

Now, it is almost as if there are journalists struggling to emerge, in these articles.

Where the hell were all these tantrums and sob stories when Joe Pedo destroyed 11,000 jobs by shutting down the Keystone pipeline?

Student loans need to be returned to the private sector where loan officers will only approve loans based on grades AND the profession the applicant is applying for to make sure the loan can be repaid. No degrees in under water basket weaving, women’s studies etc.

If someone wants to pursue those professions they can work their way through college.

Price's Law states that a small percentage of people produce a disproportionate amount of output in a given domain. Specifically, it suggests that the square root of the total number of workers produces half of the work.

For example:

If 100 people are working on a project, about 10 of them will produce 50% of the total output.

If 10,000 researchers exist in a field, roughly 100 of them will generate half of the significant discoveries.

It highlights the uneven distribution of productivity, similar to Pareto's 80/20 principle (20% of the employees do 80% of the work), and is often used to explain why excellence is concentrated in a few individuals while most contribute relatively little.

Bottom line: The government can be pared down to a fraction of its current size and productivity might actually go up.

Sounds like the cash impact is about $200M. Unfortunately, most State bureaucracies (with exceptions) are just as ideologically malign as the DOE.

Linda McMahon told Laura Ingraham that the end goal is to shutter DOE completely and permanently.

I’m fine with the Dept of Ed only cutting half it’s workforce...as long as they cut another half the month after that and another half the month after that and...

Of course, this is Zeno’s Paradox and we’d never get rid of DOE that way. But once they got down to one lonely janitor sitting in the corner with nothing to do, we could say “Mission Accomplished.”

Still only half measures! It needs to be abolished or it will regrow like a cancer if demwits ever get control again.

Nowhere does the BBC article mention that since the establishment of the federal Department of Education that average K-12 proficiency test scores have declined considerably. It also does not mention that since the big increases in federal funding supports for college tuition that the average college tuition has exploded far above the rate of inflation of anything else in the economy.
